• lighter - aluminum construction
• requires only 2 or 3 amps passing through
slip rings compared to high amperage in
D.C. generator
• governs its own maximum current
output

• Generators - moving conductors through
stationary field to induce voltage
• Alternators - moving field across
stationary conductor to induced voltage
• maximum voltage occurs when
conductor cuts heaviest lines of force
