Tutorial 4: Kinetics of Particles: Force and Acceleration
Question 1: If the 50-kg crate starts from rest and achieves a velocity of v = 4 m/s when it
travels a distance of 5 m to the right, determine the magnitude of force P acting on the crate.
(Answer: P=224 N)

Question 2: The 400-kg mine car is hoisted up the incline using the cable and motor M. For
a short time, the force in the cable is F = (3200t2) N, where t is in seconds. If the car has an
initial velocity v1 = 2 m/s at s = 0 and t = 0,
a) Determine the distance it moves up the plane when t = 2 s.
b) Determine its velocity when t = 2 s. (13-20/21)
(Answer: s=5.43m; v=14.1 m/s)

Question 3: The 5-kg collar A is sliding around a smooth vertical guide rod. At the instant
shown, the speed of the collar is v = 4 m/s, which is increasing at 3 m/s2. Determine the
normal reaction of the guide rod on the collar, and force P at this instant.
(Answer: P=17.3 N; N=120 N)

Question 4: The 2-kg spool S fits loosely on the inclined rod for which the coefficient of
static friction is = 0.2 . If the spool is located 0.25 m from A, determine the minimum
constant speed the spool can have so that it does not slip down the rod. (13-59)
(Answer: v=0.969 m/s)

Question 5: At the instant = 600, the boys center of mass G has a downward speed vG =
3 m/s. Determine the rate of increase in his speed and the tension in each of the two
supporting cords l = 3 m of the swing at this instant. The boy has a weight of 300 N. Neglect
his size and the mass of the seat and cords. (13-64)
(Answer: at =4.91 m/ s2;T =175.8 N)
