Verily,themosttruthfulofspeechistheSpeechofAllh,andthebestguidance
istheguidanceofMuhammad() .Theworstofaffairsarethose
thatarenewlyintroduced,andeverynewlyintroducedaffairisaninnovation,
andeveryinnovationisamisguidance,andeverymisguidanceleadstotheFire.

ThebookalFawidisfromthebestofIbnalQayyimsbooks.Itwaswrittenas
ifheisamanwhoiseightyyearsofage,sittingandtalkingabouthisexperiences
inlife.Andtheyare,ashetitledthem,alFawid(pointsofbenefit).Everything
thatIbnalQayyimhaswrittenisfromthebestofwhatwaswrittenforIslm.In
truth,IbnalQayyimisaripenedfruitthatsproutedfromIbnTaymiyyah.Ibn
Taymiyyahisdistinguishedforhisvastunderstandingandknowledge,andhe
spentagreatpartofhislifeasaMujhidbetweenonebattleandanother.One
time,heledabattlehimself,whentherulersofShmsatbackfromconfronting
theTatars,andsaid:Weareunabletoconfrontthem.So,IbnTaymiyyahsaid:
Wewillconfrontthem,andAllhgavethemvictory.

Isay:IbnTaymiyyahsproutedaninhuman,ripenedfruit,andthatfruitwasIbn
alQayyim.IbnalQayyimisdistinguishedwithhisdepthofsoul,andconstant
worship.Onetime,hepassedthoughMakkah,andthepeopleofMakkahwere
amazedattheamountofworshiphewouldengagein,andhisconstant
preoccupationwiththeremembranceofAllh.6

yourlife
HopingandfearingonewhoisundertheauthorityofAllh,and
whoseforeheadisinHisHand,whilehecannotbringanybenefit,
harm,life,death,orresurrectiontohimself.

However,thegreatestofthesemattersisthewastingoftheheart,andthe
wastingoftime.Wastingtheheartisdonebypreferringthisworldlylifeoverthe
Hereafter,andwastingtimeisdonebyhavingincessanthopes.Allevilisin
followingonesdesiresandhavingincessanthopes,whileallgoodnessisfound
infollowingtherightpathandpreparingoneselftomeetAllh,andAllhisthe
sourceofAssistance.

Here,hesummarizedallevilinthesetwoissues:wastingoftheheart,and
wastingoftime.Wastingtheheartisdonebypreferringthisworldlylifeoverthe
Hereafter,andwastingtimeisdonebyhavingincessanthopes,andincessant
hopesandthefollowingofonesdesiresaretheultimatemanifestationofevil.

Inreality,IbnalQayyimhasoverthirtyfamousworksthatarestillprintedandreadtoday.

ThefollowingofguidanceandthepreparationforthemeetingwithAllharethe
basisofallthatisgood:








{Asforhimwhotransgressedandpreferredthelifeofthisworld,verily,his
abodewillbeHellfire.AndasforhewhofearedthestandingbeforehisLord,
andrestrainedhimselffromimpuredesiresandlusts,verily,Paradisewillbehis
abode.}9

PreferringthelifeofthisworldovertheHereaftercorruptstheheart,andtheone
whofearswillpreparethepreparationthatdoesnotwastehistime.Theseare
thetwomanifestationsofrectification:fearingthestandingbeforetheLord,
whichresultsinthepreparationformeetingHim,andnotwastingonestime.
Thisbringslifetotheheart,astheheartsaregivenlifebyavoidingthedesires
andfollowingtheguidance.







{Verily,WehaveplacedyouasasuccessoronEarth.So,judgebetweenmen
withtruth,anddonotfollowyourdesire,foritwillmisleadyoufromthePath
ofAllh.}10

Desiresaretherootofoppression,andtheyaretherootofwastefulness,and
theyaretherootofindecentsins,andtheyaretherootofallevil,becausetheone
whofollowshisdesireshasessentiallypushedasidetheguidance.So,ourjobis,
asAllhSaid:





{Andfollowthatwhichisrevealedtoyou,andbepatientuntilAllhJudges,
andHeisthebestofjudges.}11

Thefollowingofdesiresisfromhastiness,andpatienceistogoagainstones
desires.Theonewhorestrainshistongueiskeepinghistonguepatientfrom
invadingtheprivacyofotherpeople.Theonewhorestrainshiseyesightis
keepinghiseyespatientfromtheinclinationtolook.Theonewhoispatientfrom
zinisresistingtheinclinationthatispushinghimtocommitanindecentact.The
onewhobreakshisfastinRamadnisfollowingthedesiresofhisstomach,and
patienceistoresistthisdesire.Theonewhoremainsfirminthemidstofabattle
isresistingthedesiretoescapewithhislife.Theonewhoremainspatientinthe
prisonsofthetyrantswillbefacedwiththedesireofthedunythatisopenfor
himoutsideofhisprisoncell.Theonewhoispatientuponpovertyisresisting
thedesirethatiswhisperingtohimtotakewealthwhichisforbiddenforhim,or
toworkajobthatisforbiddenforhim,inordertogetmoneybyanymeans.
Becauseofthis,thebasisofallevilaswassaidistohaveincessanthopes,
resultinginthewastingofyourtime,whileyoudonotknowwhenyourtime
willcome,andwhenthecalleroftheLordoftheWorldswillsay:Come,itis
timetogotoAllh,theMightyandMajestic.

TheMessengerofAllh() said:

Takeadvantageoffivethingsbeforefiveotherthings:fromyouryouth
beforeyouroldage,yourhealthbeforeyoursickness,yourwealthbeforeyour
poverty,yourfreetimebeforeyoubecomeoccupied,andfromyourlifebefore
yourdeath.12

Takeadvantageofyouryouth,becauseyouaretodayabletoperformoptional
fasts,andtomorrow,whenyouareapproachingoldage,andyouwillneedto
nourishandfeedyourbonesandflesh,youwillnotbeabletowithstandthe
painsoffasting.Rightnow,youareayouthwhocangetupandprayinthe
middleofthenight,stayingupinthebowingsandprostrationsthatyoucan
presenttotheLordoftheWorldstobearwitnessforyou,ortoonedaykeepyou
companyinthelonelinessofyourgrave.Today,youareintheearlyyearsof
yourlife,theyearsofyouryouth.Thetimeofyouth,Obrothers,isthetimeof
struggle.Itisthetimeinwhichyouaresupposedtoexertyourselfandsacrifice!
Itisthetimeinwhichyouarenottieddownwithmanyresponsibilities,asyou
arealone,orhavejustawifeandchild.Tomorrow,astheyearspass,the
responsibilitiespileup,theproblemsoftheworldcatchuptoyou,andyouwish

tosolvetheproblemsofyourfamily,children,andrelativesthiswilltakemuch
ofyourtime.

So,now,youareinthestageofyouryouth,thestageofstruggleandsacrifice.I
wouldoftenremarkthatIamamazedattheyouthwhoisafraid!Whatisthere
forhimtobeafraidof?Andifheisafraidatthisage,howwillhebetomorrow?
Thisperiodistheprimeperiodofoneslife.Theyouthispreparedtopresenthis
verysoulfortheSakeofAllh,theMightyandMajestic.Becauseofthis,ifwe
looktothepeoplewhofirstgavevictorytotheReligionofAllh,wewouldfind
thattheywereallyouths.Infact,mostofthemthreefourths,orfourfifthsof
themwerelessthentwentyyearsofage,becausethisistheperiodofexertion
andsacrifice.

IntheSahhayn,13AbdarRahmnbinAwfnarrated:

IwasstandingintheranksonthedayofBadr.So,ayoungboyapproachedme
hewasattheageofpuberty,orrecentlypasttheageofpubertyandsaid:O
uncle!WhereisAbJahl?So,Isaidtohim:Whatdoyouwantwithhim?He
isconfused:thisyoungboyisaskingaboutAbJahl,theknight,thecommander
ofjhiliyyah.Theboyreplied:IheardthatheinsultstheMessengerofAllh
() .So,byAllh,ifIseehim,myshadowwillnotleavehisuntilI
killhim,orhekillsme.

Then,anotheryoungboyapproachedme,whowasofthesameageasthe
previousboy.Hesaidtome:Ouncle!WhereisAbJahl?Iaskedhim:What
doyouwantwithhim?Hereplied:Weheardthathewouldinsultthe
MessengerofAllh() .ByAllh,ifIseehim,myshadowwillnot
leavehisuntilIkillhim,orhekillsme.

Afterawhile,IspottedAbJahlfromafar.So,Isaid:Thisisyourcompanion
(i.e.themanyouseek),andIwishedthatIcouldbebetweentheribsofthis
youthi.e.IwishedthatIcouldbeinthechestofthisyouth,andthatmyheart
couldbeliketheheartofthisyouth:zealousandenergetic,andlookingforward
todeath.So,theydashedtowardshim.Shortlyafter,theyreturned,saying:O
MessengerofAllh!Wekilledhim!TheMessengerofAllh()

AbdullhbinMasdthensearchedthroughthecorpses,foundAbJahl
breathinghislastbreath,andsatonhischest.AbJahlopenedhiseyestoseeIbn
Masdonhischest,andsaid,inadegradingfashion:Wereyounotoneofour
shepherdsinMakkah?IbnMasdsaid:Icertainlywas,OenemyofAllh.
AbJahlthensaid:Youhaveputyourselfinadifficultposition,youcamel
shepherd.Yousitonmychest?Nobodyhaseversatthemselvesdownonsuch
anhonorablething.IbnMasdthensaid:Whosedayisittoday?Whoisthe
victoriousone?AllhandHisMessenger() .17Ofcourse,thereare
othernarrations,whoseauthenticitycannotbeconfirmed,thathesaid:Inform
Muhammad() thatIwillremainhisenemyuntilmylastbreath.
ThereisalsoanarrationthatwhenAbdullhbinMasdwasinMakkah,Ab
Jahlhithim,injuringhisear.So,whenIbnMasdwassittingonthechestof
AbJahl,hecutoffhishead.ItwasnarratedthathethenpiercedaholeinAb
Jahlsear,tiedaropethroughit,anddraggedhisheadbythisrope.Itseemsthat
AbJahlsheadwasquitelarge,andIbnMasdwasafrail,weakperson.So,
whentheMessengerofAllh() sawAbJahlsseveredhead,he
fellintoprostrationoutofgratitudetoAllh,andsaid:BytheOnebesides
Whomthereisnoneworthyofworship,thereisaFirawnforeveryummah,
HeisMudhbinAmrbinalJamalAnsralKhazrajasSalam.HewitnessedBayatal
Aqabah,aswellasBadr.HediedduringthereignofUthmn.(seeIbnHajarsalIsbahfTamyz

anditisalsosaidthattheMessengerofAllh() ,afterhesawthe
ropetiedthroughtheholeinAbJahlsear,rememberedthedaythathehad
injuredIbnMasdsearinMakkah,andthensaidtoIbnMasd:Anearforan
ear,andtheheadisextra.19

Isay:thisisAbJahl,whoseexistencethepeoplewererelievedofbytwoyoung
boysintheearlypartoftheirlives.Theywerearoundseventeenyearsofage,
whichwouldputtheminhighschool!Eachoneofthemfacedandkilledtheelite
knightofQuraysh,AbJahl,givingtheMessengerofAllh() the
gladtidingsofhavingfinallygottenridofhim.Andifyoulooktothebattlesof
Badr,theTrench,Mutah,etc.,youwouldnotfindexceptyouths.

InthetwoWorldWars,Britainandtheotherpowerfulnationsusedtodepend
ontheyouthwhowereseventeen,eighteen,andnineteenyearsofageforthe
carryingoutofthemostdangerousoperations,becausetheywerepreparedtodo
anything,andtheydonotstandforalongtimetothink.TheChinesewould
traintheirsuicidefighters,andadvisethemtodependonpeopleofsuchageto
carryouttheiroperations,saying:Theoperationsthatrequireputtingonesself
ingreatdangershouldnotbecarriedoutbythosewhoareolderinage,asthey
mightdelaytheentireoperation,becausetheywillstandandthinkto
themselves:Whatwilltheoutcomebe?Whatisthebenefitinthis?So,such
philosophyandrationalewillpreventthemfromexertingthemselvesand
sacrificing,andmovementsandcallsarenotgivenvictoryintheirearlystagesby
thosewhostandandthinktoomuch.Rather,theyaregivenvictorybythe
peoplewithemotionandheart.20So,theheatofemotionandtheincitementof
theheartarewhatresultinsacrifice.Asforsocalledrationalthinking,thisis
whatsaystotheperson:Donotexertyourself,anddonotsacrifice.Themindis
generallycoldandstagnant,anddoesnotinclinetowardssacrifice.Itinclines
ReportedbyalHaytham,inMajmaazZawid(6/79),andhesaid:ReportedbyatTabarn,
anditsmenarethemenoftheSahh,exceptforMuhammadbinWahbbinAbKarmah,andhe
istrustworthy.So,itishasan,andAllhKnowsbest.ItwasalsoreportedbyatTabarn(8468
8476),andalBayhaq,inadDalil(2/261262),andalBukhr(3961)andAbDwd(2772)
bothreportedashorterversionofthis.

towardscontemplation.So,ifonesemotionsaystohim:Exertyourself.Allh
willcompensateyou,themindthensays:Donotreduceyourwealth.Ifthe
emotionsays:Sacrificeyourself,themindsaystohim:Ifyouremain,youwill
beofgreaterbenefittoIslm,andsoon.

Becauseofthis,youwouldfindthatwiththethinkersandphilosophers,their
wordsareinthesky,whiletheiractuallivesarestagnantatthefootofa
mountain.Thereisahugedifferencebetweenwhattheycalltoandthereality
thattheylive.So,wemustpayspecialattentiontotheyearsofonesyouth.Anas
binMliksaid:TheMessengerofAllh() cametoMadnahwith
hisCompanions,andtherewasnotasinglemanwithwhitehairinhishead
exceptforAbBakr,whohaddyeshisbeardwithhennaandsaffron.21Nota
singlepersonhadawhitehaironhisheadexceptforAbBakr,andAbBakr
was51atthetime,andUmarwas41,andthiswasaftertheProphethoodby
thirteenyears.AsforwhentheMessengerofAllh() wasfirstsent
forthandthepeoplebelievedinhim,AbBakrwas38,andallofthosewhohad
acceptedIslmwerebetween15and25,inadditiontothosewhowerechildren.

AllhtheMightyandMajesticwillaskaspecificquestiontotheyouthonthe
DayofResurrection:Thetwofeetofaservantwillnotmovefromtheirplaces
untilheisaskedaboutfourthings:abouthislifeandwhathedidwithit,
abouthisyouthandhowhespentit,abouthowwellheacteduponhis
knowledge,andabouthisearningswhereheobtainedit,andwhathespent
iton.22

AllhtheMightyandMajesticwillaskabouthislife.Then,Hewillaskthe
secondquestion,whichisinregardstohisyouth,despitethefactthattheperiod
ofyouthisitselfpartofthelifethathewasjustaskedabout!Regardless,Allh
hassingledouttheperiodofyouthforquestioning:

afterweakness,then,afterstrength,gaveyouweaknessandgreyhair.He
CreateswhatHeWills,andHeistheAllKnowing,theAllPowerful.}23

Ofcourse,youareatanageinwhichSatanwillenteruponyoubywayofyour
studies,andbywayofyourincessanthopes.IfitissaidtoyoutocalltoAllh
theMightyandMajesticortogivesomeofyourtimeforAllh,Satanenters
uponyou,saying:Rightnow,youarestillinschool.Tomorrow,whenyouget
yourdegreeyourweaponinthesocietyyoucanworkforAllh.

Firstofall,youdonotknowwhenyouwillgraduate,andyoudonotknow
whenyouwilldie,andyoudonotknowhowyouwillmeetyourLord.So,
bewareofhavingtheseincessanthopes.

Secondly,ifyouaretoostingywithAllhtogiveHimsomeofyourtimeatsuch
anearlyage,thecomingtimeswillproveyoutobeevenstingier.Whata
differencethereisbetweenthosewhoareinfusedwithIslmatanearlyage,and
thosewhogetoldandenterintoIslmatanoldage.Whatadifference!Thisis
becausetobenurtureduponIslmfromayoungageismucheasier.Islm
becomesapartofyourlifeifyouareyoung,andyourlimbs,soul,andlifeare
transformedintoapartofIslm.Infact,youaretransformedintoapartofthe
bodyofIslm,justlikethesmalltreeandthelargetree:thelargetreehasan
establishedtrunkanddriedupbark,makingithardtochangethedirectionin
whichitsbranchesarepointed.Thesmalltree,ontheotherhand,canbemoved
inwhateverdirectionyouwish,asitisstillabletobemanipulatedbyyour
hands.Becauseofthis,theLordoftheWorldswillshadethisyouthwhowas
raisedintheobediencetoAllhonthedayinwhichtherewillbenoothershade:
TherearesevenwhomAllhwillshadebeneaththeshadeofHisThroneon
thedayinwhichtherewillbenoshadebutHisshade(including)ayouth
whowasraisedupontheobediencetoAllh.24

Intruth,IhavenoticedthatthosewhoenterintotheDawahatayoungageare
muchdifferentthanthosewhodosoatanoldage.TheIslmicDawah,whena
studententersitfromhisearlyyearsinschool,andliveswithinitsfolduntilthe
endofhislife,suchapersonbecomesinfusedwithit,andhebecomesan
inseparablepartofIslm.

Asfortheolderperson,withhissocialpositions,affluence,children,etc.
especiallyiftheworldcomescrashingdownonhisheadandhedecidesto
repent,heseekstoenterintoIslmwithconditions.So,ifhewasaminister,he
demandstoberespected,andtoenterintoIslmlivingatthesamelevelinthe
societythathewaslivingbeforehand.So,itisimpossibleforhimtobecomefully
infusedwithit.HeentersintoIslmwithmanyjhilcustoms,includingthelove
ofthisworld,andtheloveofbeingpraised.Hewantsthepeopletorespecthim.
Itisnoteasyforhimtositwiththepropermannersandlearnthisreligionasit
wasrevealedbyAllh.Additionally,therearemanyrootsthathavebeen
implantedinthecustomsofjhiliyyahthatsurroundedhislife.Forexample,here
ishiswifewhoisnowusedtodancingatparties,andthisishisdaughterwhois
nowusedtowalkingwithboys,andthisishisrelativewhoisnowusedto

drinkingteaandcoffeewiththem.Allofthismustbechanged.Ifhewishesto
liveatrulyIslmiclifestyle,hewillcomeacrossextremehardshipinattempting
toinfusethelifedescribedabovetobeinaccordancewiththeDn.

ThisisdifferentfromifhehadbeenyoungwhenenteringintotheIslmic
Dawah,knewIslm,hadlongbeenengagedinthisbattlewithhishousehold,
andhadnotmarriedexceptatrueMuslimgirl,sinceheisaMuslim,andseeks
Islmastheprimaryconditionformarriage.Asfortheonewhohaslivedmuch
ofhislifewithouttheIslmiclifestyle,heistheonesearchingforagirlof
affluence,thedaughterofthisprince,thedaughterofthatminister,thedaughter
ofthiswealthypersonthisisbecauseheisgettingmarriedsimplytoclimbup
thesocialladderonhiswifesback.Hewishestobementionedwhensheorher
familyismentioned,ortobeabletoattendagatheringandsay:Iamnow
relatedtothisminister,Iamnowapartofthisfamily.Becauseofthis,ifhethen
wishestopushallofthisawayandreturntothecrucibleofIslm,hewillfind
greathardship.Whatwillhedowithhiscompanythatwasestablishedwith
rib?Whatwillhedowiththelandheownsthatwaspurchasedwithbank
loans?Whatwillhedowithhisworldlyorientedfriendswhocontroltheland?
Whatwillhedowithallofthis?Hewillcuthimselfofffromallofthis;hewill
cuthimselfofffromhisfriends,hewillcuthimselfofffromhiscompanions,he
willstophavingthenightpartiesanddancesallofthiswillend.Itisnoteasy
foramantosimplykickallofthistothesidewithhisfootandreturntoAllh.

Theperiodofonesyouthisfromthemostimportantperiodsofoneslife.
Believeme,brothers:IhaveseensomeofthosewhowereguidedbyAllhto

beingacquaintedwithregularprayerandpayingZakhatanoldage,andoneof
themsaidtome:IfeelasifIamahypocrite,becauseIcannotoperatemy
companyexceptbydealinginrib,asthemonthlyrequirementsonmypart
exceedhundredsofthousands.WhenIgetuptopray,Ifeelinnerpain,andIam
unabletoridmyselfofit.Atthesametime,IwishtoturntowardsAllh.So,
thereisgreathardshipassociatedwiththereturntoAllhtheMightyand
Majesticatthisoldage.

IrememberthatweusedtoarrangeagatheringinAmmnwhichwasattended
bythosewithhighsocialpositions,companyowners,theelite,etc.So,oneofthe
attendeesaskedme:Whatdoyouthinkaboutamanwhohasneverfastedin
hislife,andis40or50yearsold?So,Isaidtohim:Thereisafatwfromthe
Hanafsthattheexpiationforonedeedofacertaintypeexpiatesforallofthat
deedthatonehasmissed.So,ifonefastsfortwoconsecutivemonths,thiswill
expiateforhimallofthefastingthatheowes.Oneoftheotherattendeeswho
wasinhisforties,andhadneverprayednorfastedinhislifelikedthisfatw
verymuch,anddecidedtorepenttoAllh.So,Igavethislesson,andlostcontact
withthemforsometime.

Afterwards,IvisitedthehouseinwhichIhadgiventhislesson,andIwas
startledtofindthemanwhohadaskedtheoriginalquestionsittinginthehouse,
andsaidtome:Dontyouknow?Iaskedhim:Knowwhat?Hesaid:For
sometimenow,suchandsuchfamouspersonheardthefatwyouhad
mentioned,andthenextday,hebegantoprayandfast,andhewasa
businessman.HewouldfastinthemiddleofJuly,andhisfamilybecame
worriedathissituation,becausehebeganfasting.So,theywenttoaskanother
scholar,andhesaid:Ifhehasrepented,heshouldfastasmuchasheisable.I
replied:No,Ididnotknowaboutthis.

Thismanwhorepentedlatersaidtome:Thepeoplewouldcometomeinthe
midstoftheheatthatmonth.Imean,inthesethreeorfourdaysinJuly,Ammn
neverwitnessedheatlikethis,andhewasabusinessmanwhoownedthree
shops:oneinMt.Ammn,oneinMt.Husayn,andoneinMt.alWubaydah.He
continued:So,thepeoplewouldcometometotakewaterfrommyrefrigerator
whileIwasfasting.Allthroughouttheday,mysalivawoulddripinsidemy
mouthasifitweress,andss(licorice)isabeverageweusetoquenchthe
thirst,becauseitdoessoveryquickly.Indeed,itishisfasting!Heisnowserious
abouttheaffairsofhisreligion!Inthewomensclothingstoresthatheowned,
thewomenwouldcometotryontheclothes.Theywouldtryonoutergarments,
undergarments,etc.So,hefeltthatthistypeofworkwasnotinaccordancewith

hisnewIslmiclifestyle.So,heinsisteduponquicklyputtinganendtohis
businesses.Hepurifiedhisthreeshops,andcametomewithahugeamountof
theseclothes,sayingtome:Here.Givetheseawaytothepoor.Hewishedfor
nothingmorethantoendthisbusinessthatwasattractingwomen,andhe
transformedhisbusinesstothatofsellingcarpets.Hesaid:Carpetstoresdonot
attractwomen.

Afterawhile,Iaskedhim:Howdoyoufindyourselfatthispoint?Hereplied:
IusedtosellbetweentwoandthreethousandJordaniandinrsworthof
merchandiseperday,whichequalsaboutsixtoseventhousandAmerican
dollars,andofcourse,aboutahalforthirdofthiswasprofit.However,Inever
feltthatIwasreallywealthy.Now,Isellonetenthofthisamount,andIfeelthat
mypocketsarefilledwithwealth.Ifeelblessed.

Igavethisexampletoclarifyforyouthefactthatrepentanceatanoldageisa
difficultandtiringtasktoundertake.Thisveryindividual,afterhetookcareof
hisfasting,heturnedtowardshisbusiness.Afterhepurifiedhisbusiness,he
movedontohishouseholdtocarryoutarevolutioninrectifyingit.Hiswife
wouldnotwearlongclothing,andhisdaughterwouldnotwearlongclothing
theywerelivingthemodernlifeinAmmn,andhehadlivedmuchofhislifein
Germany.Eventually,problemseruptedbetweenheandhiswife,andhewas
abletoovercomeherandputforthsomechoices:eitheralifewithmeandIslm,
oryouleavemeandreturntoyourparentshome.AsIsaidtoyou,thisperson
wasinsistent,andthisinsistencewasdonestubbornly.However,thisattemptat
changecosthimdearly.

Asforyou,allofyouraffairsareinyourhands.Youcanchooseyourwife,your
pathinlife,andyourjobthatisinaccordancewiththeSharahofAllhand
PleasesyourLord.So,fromnow,establishyourconnectionsinlifebasedon
Islm.Ifyoudoso,youwillnotfaceanyproblemsinthefuture.So,whenyou
takeadvantageoftheopportunityofyouryouth,youwillrelaxtomorrowin
yourtimeofoldage.Asyourageprogresses,itwillbecomemoredifficultfor
youtolearnIslm,anditwillbecomemoredifficultforyoutoimplementthe
religionofIslm.Becauseofthis,Umarwouldsay:Learn,beforeyouaregiven
positionsinlife.AbdalMalikbinMarwnwasconsideredtobefromthe
boldestofthescholarsofMadnah:heknewFiqh,Hadth,andArabic.mirash
Shab,whowasknownforhisknowledgeofFiqhandHadth,wasunableto
competewithAbdalMalikbinMarwn,despitethefactthathewasalsofrom
thememorizersoftheQurn,Hadth,andwasamasteroftheArabiclanguage.
WhenMarwndied,thenewscamethatitwasnowtimeforashShabtotake

overthepositionofleadership.So,ashShabheldtheMushaf,andsaidtoit:
Farewell!HetearfullyandintenselybidtheMushaffarewell,forheknewthat
leadershipandtheproblemsthatcamewithitwouldpreoccupyhimfrom
studying,reciting,andmemorizing.

So,mybrothers:

Youarenowintheprimeofyourlives!Thisistheperiodofexertion,andthisis
theperiodofworship,andthisistheperiodofDawah,andthisistheperiodof
movementandactivity!So,itisuponyoutoturntowardsIslm,learnit,
implementit,andcalltoit.Knowledge,action,andpropagation!Ifthischance
passesyou,itisagoldenopportunitythatcanneverberepeated.Howplentiful
isthefreetimeduringtheuniversitydays,andhowwonderfularetheuniversity
daysforturningtowardsAllh,andhowwonderfularetheuniversitydaysfor
worship,andhowwonderfularetheuniversitydaysforDawahtoyour
colleaguesandfriends,thoseyouknowanddonotknow!






{So,remindthem,asyouareonlyaonewhoreminds.Youarenotadictator
overthem.}25

Takeadvantageoffivethingsbeforefiveotherthings:fromyouryouth
beforeyouroldage,yourhealthbeforeyoursickness

Today,youareabletostandupduringtheprayer,andtomorrow,youwillnot
beabletoprayexceptwhilesitting.Today,youareabletofast,andtomorrow,
youwillgetsickandwillnotbeabletofast.SuchisthehealthforwhichAllh
requiresfromyousomecharity.Thetaxofthehealth,orthecharityofthehealth,
isworship,whichpurifiesthebody,purifiesthelimbs,andpreservesthemfrom
destruction.Themoreitgives,themorethebenefitincreases,andthehealthdoes
notdeclinewiththeincreaseinworship.Rather,itincreasesandisperfected:



{AskforgivenessofyourLord,andthenrepenttoHim.Hewillsenduponyou
abundantrain,andaddstrengthtoyourstrength}26

So,strengthincreaseswithrepentanceandobedienceofAllh,theGlorified.This
isnatural,sinceworshiprelaxesthebodyandnerves,andthisfurtherbuildsthe
body.

OneAfghanisaidtomethathisfatheris120yearsold,andnotasingleoneofhis
teethhavefallenouttothisday!Hepraysthefivedailyprayersinthemosque,
especiallytheFajrandIsh.Suchpreservationofthebodyinthismannercan
onlybetheresultofthepreservationofAllh27:bemindfulofAllah,andHe
willtakecareofyou...28So,worshipiswhatpreservesthebody,andaslongas
theconnectionwithAllhisgood,itwillpreservethebody:bemindfulof
Allah,andHewilltakecareofyou

Takeadvantageoffivethingsbeforefiveotherthings:fromyouryouth
beforeyouroldage,yourhealthbeforeyoursickness,andyourwealthbefore
yourpoverty,because,asAlbinAbTlibsaid:Iamamazedatthestingy
personwhorunsfromthewealththathesoughtout,andseeksthepovertythat
hehasrunfrom.Helivesthelifeofapoorpersoninthisworld,andhewillbe
takentoaccountinthenextlifeasawealthyperson.Hehoardsthiswealthto
thathewouldbuyhissonsalcoholwithit,orcars,ortomakeiteasyforthemto
chaseaftergirls,andhewilleventuallybecrushedundertheironhammerof
MunkarandNakr,andtheAngelsofpunishmentinhisgrave.AndtheAngels
thatfollowMlikinHellwilltakehimtoaccountforeverybitofwealththathe
everowned!

Thereisastorythat,whilebeingmerelysymbolic,isdeeplyaffecting.Thestory
isthatawealthypersondied,andhischildrensaid:Wewishforamantokeep
ourfathercompanyinhisgraveforjustonenight.So,theydugtwoholes,and
connectedeachwiththeother.Inoneoftheholes,theyputtheirfather,andthey

willtakecareofhimwhenheisoldandhasbecomeweak,andwillblesshimwithgoodhearing,

yearsandenjoyedgoodstrengthandreasoningjumpedupinalivelymanneroneday,andwas
askedaboutthat.Hesaid:IkeptthesephysicalfacultiesfromsinwhenIwasyoung,andAllh
haspreservedthemformenowthatIamold.Theoppositealsoapplies.OneoftheSalafsawan
oldmanbeggingfrompeople,andsaid:ThisisaweakmanwhoignoredAllahwhenhewas

dead.Oneisspendingonenighthere,andtheotheriswithusforgood.Since
thispersonisleavingtomorrow,letusbeginbyquestioninghim.So,theyasked
him:Whoareyou?

Hereplied:Mynameissuchandsuch.

Whatdoyoudoforaliving?

Iamaservantwhocarriesthingsforpeople.

Youcarrythingsforpeople?Whatdoyouusetocarrythesethings?

Iusearopemadeoffiber.

Wereyousurethatthisfiberwaspure,andwasnotnajas?Andhowdidyou
earnthetenshillingswithwhichyoupurchasedtherope?

Iworkedforsuchandsuchaperson.

Wereyousurethathiswealthwasacquiredbypermissiblemeans,andnotby
forbiddenmeans?

Anyway,theycontinuedquestioninghimabouttheropeandhisworkfrom
sunsettothenextmorning,afterwhichheexitedthegrave.So,thechildrenof
thedeadmancametohim,askingaboutwhathadhappened.Hereplied:Your
fatherwillnotceasetobepunisheduntiltheDayofResurrection.Theyasked
him:Why?Hereplied:BecauseIdidownexceptthissinglepieceofropethat
Icarrythingswith,andtheAngelsspenttheentirenightaskingmeaboutit,
whereIgotit,whereIwentwithit,etc.So,howwoulditbeforyourfather,who
ownedallofthesegardens,palaces,andbuildings?Whenwouldtheyfinish
takinghimtoaccount?

Intruth,thisissimplyasymbolicstory.However,itcarriesdeepmeaningand
causeforreflection.

Beingtakentoaccountisintense.BeingtakentoaccountbyAllhisintense.The
issueisnotlight.So,prepareyourproperprovisionsfromnow,andmake
yourselfreadyfortheaccountingwithyourLord,andknowthattomorrow,you
willbestandingbetweentheHandsofAllh,andwillbequestionedaboutevery
oneofyouractions:




{Andthosewhodowrongwillcometoknowbywhatoverturningtheywill
beoverturned.}29

So,mybrothers:

HowmanytimeshaveIsaidtoyouthatyouarenowintheprimeofyourlives,
andthatyoumustturntowardsIslmwithknowledge,action,andpropagation!
Itiseasyforyoutolearn,toact,andtoteach.Ifyoudonotdothiswithinthis
period,youhaveletanopportunitypassyoubythatwillnevershowitselfagain.
Freetimeisnotreplaceable!Youmightneveragainexperienceaperiodinwhich
youhavethisamountoffreetime,so,takeadvantageofit!Bewareofhaving
incessanthopesandfollowingyourdesires!Incessanthopeswasteyourtime,
andfollowingyourdesirescorruptsyourheart,andIadviseyoutoreadthe
NobleQurneveryday!Iadviseyoutoreadatleasthalfofajuz,sothatyou
wouldcompletetheentireQurneverytwomonths,atleast.

Ialsoadviseyoutobeconstantwiththeremembrancesandsupplicationsofthe
morningandevening.RecitethemaftertheFajrprayer,andattendtheFajrand
Ishprayersinthemosque:HewhopraysIshincongregationisasifhe
hasprayedforhalfthenight,andhewhopraystheFajrincongregationisasif
hehasprayedallnight.30Also,thereisthehadthreportedbyatTirmidh:
Whoeverpraysthemorningprayerincongregation,thensitsremembering
Allhuntilsunrise,thenpraystwounitsofDuhprayer,hasacomplete
rewardofHajjand`Umrah,hasacompleterewardofHajjand`Umrah,hasa
completerewardofHajjand`Umrah.31

university.Prepareyourclassnotesforschooldaybyday,anddonotputanyof
thisoff.Bewareofhavingincessanthopes,resultinginyourtimebeinglost.
Prepareeverythingdaybyday.Youwillbeaskedabouteverysecondofyour
life,asontheDayofResurrection,everybreaththatyoutookwilltearitself
apartoutofsorrowandregret.So,Fajrprayer,Qurnrecitation,istighfr,
congregationalprayers,fastingtwodaysofeveryweek,havinggood,righteous
friendsatschoollookforthegood,sincerefriendswhowillhelpyoutofulfill
theDawahofAllh,Islm32:forAllhtoguideonemanthroughyouis
betterforyouthanthebesttypeofcamels,33andyouareresponsibleinfront
ofAllhforrelayingHisReligion,asAllhhasmadeyouaMuslim,andhas
madeyoufromthebestnationbroughtforthformankind,because:

IbnJamahsaid:Thestudentofknowledgeshouldnotmixexceptwitheitherthosehecan
benefit,orcanbenefitfrom.Andifheisofferedthefriendshipofonewhowillwastehistime
withhim,willnotbenefithim,willnotbenefitfromhim,andwillnotassisthiminreachinghis
objective,heshouldpolitelyendtherelationshipfromthestartbeforeitprogressestosomething
deeper,aswhensomethingbecomesestablished,itbecomesmoredifficulttochangeit.Thereisa
phrasethatisconstantlyonthetonguesoftheFuqah:Repellingsomethingiseasierthan
removingit.So,ifherequiressomeonetobefriend,letthatpersonberighteous,religious,pious,
wary,intelligent,fullofbenefit,havinglittleevil,goodatcomplying,rarelyconflicting,
remindinghimifheforgets,cooperatingwithhimwhenheisreminded,helpfulifheisinneed,
