Meanwhile; former President Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumarathunga (CBK) today

expressed confidence in the common opposition winning the Presidential elections
next month.

Speaking at an event at Crow Island in Colombo to mark the 10th anniversary of the
Asian tsunami, Kumarathunga said that the unity among several political parties
which are backing Maithripala Sirisena for President, gives the guarantee they can win.
Kumarathunga recalled that soon after the 2004 tsunami, political parties had united
for one cause and this ensured the country recovered from the disaster within a short
period of time.
She noted that a similar unity can now be seen with those backing Sirisena and she is
confident with that backing he will win the January 8 election.
Kumarathunga, who was President when the tsunami struck Sri Lanka, recalled the
controversy over the Helping Hambanthota fund and noted that former Chief Justice
Sarath N. Silva had also admitted he made a mistake in giving a ruling in favor of the
fund.
She said that the country is now facing a fresh disaster as a result of the actions of the
current Government and political unity is required to rebuild the country once again.
