tation, pain, grief and despair are suffering; not to obtain what
‘one wants is suffering: in shor, the five aggregates afected by
clinging ate suffering
11, “And what, fiends is birth?" The beth of beings into
the various orders of beings, thir coming to birth, precipitation
[in a womb], generation, the manifestation of the aggregates,
obtaining the bases for eantaet~ this scaled birth,
12. “And what, friends, i ageing? The ageing of beings inthe
various orders of beings, their old age, brokenness of teth,
reyes of hair, wrinkling of skin, decline of life, weakness pf

13."And what, friends, is death? The pasing of beings out of
the vatious orders of beings, thee pasting avtay, dissolution
slsappearance, dying, completion of time, dissolution of aggre
fates, laying down ofthe body ~ this called death,
14. “And what, friends, is sorrow? The sorrow, sonrawing,
sorrowfulness, inner sorrow, inner sorriness, of one who has

18. "And wha, friend, is despalt? The trouble and despair,
the tribulation andl desperation, of one who has encountered
some misfortune or is affected by some painful slate ~ this is
calle despate.
19. “And what, friends, isnot to obtain what one wants is su
fering’? To beings subject to bith there comes the wish ‘Oh,
that we were not subjet to bir! That bith would not come to
us But this is otto be obtained by wishing. and not to obtain
‘what one wants is suffering. To beings subject to ageing. .oub-

tion, pan, grey and despa, dere comes the wish: ‘Oh, that we
were not subject to sorrow, lamentation, pan, grit, and espait!
‘That sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair would not

obtain what one wants i suering.
20. "And what, friends, are the five aggregates affected by
slinging that, in short, are suffering? They ae: the material form

secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unvholesome

' accompanied by applied and sustained thought, with raphe

sustained thought, he enters upon and abides in the second
{sina which hassel coalidence and singleness of mind without
