Education System In Guam

Like every country, each local education system in an area strives
to be the best there is. The Guam Department of Education, also known
as GDOE is a single unified school district throughout the island. With
grades starting at Kindergarten to 12th grade, there are currently 27
elementary, 7 middle, and 6 public high schools. There are over 30,000
students enrolled for the 2014-2015 school year. Each school is
modified to the United States school system and is a mandate for
children 5 through 16 years of age to attend school.
The language of instruction is English. Although, students are
required to take the native language, Chamorro, every school year
starting in the second grade up until the students freshman year in high
school. In addition, in order to graduate in GDOE, one year of Guam
History is mandatory for every student.
The graduating class of 2015 and classes after are required to not
only graduate with all of their school credits but also with 75 Service
Leaning hours. These hours are designed to help assist and grantee the

average student to get evolved with their school and community. Once
the students of 2015 graduate, GDOE will see how Public Law 30-53
goes to affect.
Disbursement of funds in GDOE is insufficient. Guam Department
of Education Superintendent, Jon Fernandez drive the senators of Guam
to find better solutions for the departments disbursements of its
funding issues. Governor Edward J. Baza Calvo stated, I trust John
Fernandez to put this money to the best use for the public school
(Calvo, 2014).
