MITCHELUS LAKE TROUT AT MICHI 2015 Newsletter Chetisonidtes MENT AND STAFF AT HAWK AIR Michi Work Michi Lake is one of our family’s favourite places to go. One of our projects this summer was to add a water system, The weather made this project a challenge but we were eventually able to complete it There was no room in the camp for a shower so we built an 8 x 8 foot building which wil serve as both a shower room and a propane station, We also added a new 12 x 16 foot deck infront ofthe camp along with a new larger crib and a walkway to the outhouse. A second boat was als placed on Brian Lake allowing more people to fish here Michi offers an experience unlike any of our other camps. Not only isthe lake trout fishing great, but caribou inhabit the island and there isa good chance of seeing one while out fishing or hiking, Michipicoten [sland has a great history Teall ror the camp take you down to the shore of Lake Superior to explore the copper mines from the late 1800' UPPER DUFFY WITH NEW DECK AND STAIRS Work Crew Report ‘This summer our work crew and staff kept very busy. Along with the work at Michi, we were able to complete a number of other projects. We removed the lower deck at Upper Duffy and built an flew back to the base for repairs. We also added a new thirteen cubic foot fridge at Duffy. Little Miss was another camp where we changed out one of the smaller fridges fora larger one. New 3000 watt generators were added to both Little Miss and Mosambik along with electric toasters and coffee makers. Building a set of stairs at Easey Point from the beach up to the ‘camp has been on our job list for many years. This year we finally had the opportunity to complete the project. While we were there we also built a walkway from the top of the stairs to the camp. The propane station was moved down to the gas shack. This past season we purchased sixteen new 9.9 horsepower Yamaha four stroke outboard motors. These clean running and quiet units were very well received by our guests and we hope to add another ten to our fleet for 2015, ‘Our guests have really enjoyed the new, more comfortable, hospital grade mattresses. Another twenty will be put at various camps next season. eight foot extension onto the main deck. We also added a new set of stairs from the crib up to the camp and built a new 12 x 12 foot front dock. The ice took out the main crib, some walkways, and a boat at Duffy this spring. We rebuilt the crib and walkways, the boat we We are in the process of installing garden hoses at each of our ‘camps with water systems. This will make it easier for our guests to clean the fish tables, boats, etc We are always doing regular maintenance on our camps and we appreciate hearing your ideas and recommendations. Manttari Family Adventures This past summer our sons, Makai and Fynn were able to get ‘out for a few fishing and work tips. Our children have been ‘going into the bush since they were in diapers. Makai is now eight and Fyn is six In early June we had the opportunity to go to Dossier for a night, We had never gone speck fishing in the spring before, so this was a new experience for us. The fishing was fantastic, even off the dock. They had a blast catching snakes, frogs and ‘exploring around the camp. The bugs were fierce but that didivt seem to slow them down, As July olled around, we made our way to Little Mis, this time with Uncle Kelly. We had some minor jobs and repairs to cdo while there. In our two days we visited the pictographs, went to the falls, had a marshmallow roast, swam, built a new outhouse, burned an old outhouse, changed the waste water system and stil found time to catch our limit of walleye. When you only have two days, you have to make the best fit I August the boys headed out to Michi with Dad, Uncle Kelly, Uncle Andy and Bulf (Kelly Sr). They spent the day helping fasten the deck boards to the walkway for the shower room and outhouse. Makai and Fynn love to work with the “guys” but they did manage to step away from work to do some exploring and collect creatures that they so kindly shared with everyone. Atthe end of September the kids helped Dad, Uncle Kelly and Bob close down Easey Point. Lenny and myself held down the business in Hawk, so we now refer to ourselves as the backbone of the company. In closing camps there salt to be done. They spent the whole day collecting motors, cleaning and buttoning the camp up for winter. Not much time for adventuring this ime but Dad made sure to get his litle men out fishing before they flew back home Matti and | are very fortunate that our boys have these adventures. Many people think their children are too young to do this type of trip but our kids never get bored. Our family enjoys the experiences the North has to offer, and we wouldn't want to live anywhere else Courtney MANTTARI BOYS FISHING AT LITTLE MISS Duffy NW v 1,100 Acres 48 * Upper Duffy NW v 750 Acres 28 * Easey Point NWP (NW) v 1,700 Acres 410 * Mosambik NWP (LT) vy 2,400 Acres 412 * Anaharea N,UT,WE, P v 2,100 Actes 410 * Wejin NAW (N,W,LT) v 500 Acres 28 * Lobo NW (NW) v 650 Acres 26 Little Missinaibie NW v 3,600 Acres 6-10 * Pichogan NW v 800 Acres 48 * Dibben NW v 475 Acres 26 * Dossier ST 250 Actes 48 * Spyke ST 250 Acres 26 * Jackfish ST 450 Acres 26 * Michi wr v 300 Acres 48 * McCrea ST 575 Acres 48 Abbreviations N- Northern, W-Walleye, ST - Speckled Trout of Brook Tout, LT - Lake Trout, WF - Whitefish, P-Perch “Indicates only camp on the lake, () Indicates portage to another lake shing 2014 Anglers were challenged this season with alot of cool, wet and very windy days. Some of our larger and more popular lakes, Duffy, Anaharea, Mosambik and Little Miss, produced many great sized fish this summer. Anaharea is a lake trout, pike and whitefish ake. The whitefish fishing was fantastic and some of the tout caught were unbelievably large. With the high winds many of our fishermen back-trolled and fished at dusk. Upper Duffy and Dibben were two of the lakes that produced a lot of walleye in the evening hours. Lobo, which accommodates groups of two to six, had fantastic fishing throughout the summer. Glen Lake, the portage off Lobo, hhad very successful walleye fishing in June and July. Other lakes with the option of portages are Easey Point, Welin and Mosambik. Wejin isa smaller lake but a lot of our anglers enjoy having the option of three lakes. North AND S Wejin is a walleye and pike lake, which had the most consistent fishing for anglers staying at Wejin. The Lake Trout Lake, shared between Wejin and Mosambik fished well in the early mornings but slowed down as the day went on. Speckled trout fishermen have the most success in May and June and then again in late August. Spyke, Jackfish and McCrea produced a lot of nice fish, Dossiers the exception to this with good numbers being caught throughout the season. ‘Once the camps were closed and planes put away, the tool belts came out. Our project this fall was the construction of a 16 x 18 foot addition onto our Red Shack This new building, ‘The Boat Works’ will be a multipurpose building. Repairs on some of the boats may be quite extensive, therefore we need to fly them out to be fixed. In the winter it will become our rink shack. Each winter Kelly Sr. turns our lower dock area into a large rink where the family spends some of our free time skating and playing hockey. This building will give us a warm place to tie up skates and warm up by the fire. Story of a Dock Boy | atm carrying ona family tradition, both of my sons were dack boys at Hawk Airas teenagers.
