Course Goals:
This course is an introduction to the writing and analysis of prose. Students will
analyze prose writing and practice a number of writing strategies that consider a
variety of audiences and purposes. The course furthers the development of
writing and analytical skills acquired in CM1120 and introduces the student to
writing intended to critique, persuade, and analyze.

Toronto: Pearson, 2012.
Note: The bibliographic style guide for this course is The Modern Language
Association Handbook, 7th edition. A copy is available in the Reference area of
the library.
Reading Schedule:
The chapters in the text will be covered mainly in chronological order. Specific
readings will be assigned in a separate syllabus.

Marking Scheme:
The marking scheme for each assignment will be specified in class.
Penalties:
On days that assignments are due, you will pass in a paper copy of your assignment and
forward me an electronic copy of your paper as well. Papers will not be marked until I
receive both copies. The calculation of late penalties is the same as in CM1120. If you
are handing in an assignment outside of class and my office hours, please go to the
Learner Services Office and request that your work be date stamped and held for pickup. Essays handed in after 3:30pm in any format will be considered received the
following weekday. The version you first hand in will be the only one accepted.
A reminder: College policy on plagiarism is outlined in the Calendar and will be enforced.
See The MLA Handbook, Chapter 2, for a definition and thorough discussion of
plagiarism. Correctly document your research findings as you do the work. Be sure to
