Jake is wondering around the empty town centre alone. Jake Smith For 2 months, I have been a detective. For 2 months I have been living in a dirt and take it from me, some of its bound to rub off on you. You get to hate people. Everyone you meet. And faking a smile becomes your number one duty. The other night I had a dinner with this dame, she was gorgeous, but she forgot to mention that her man was a gorilla. This guy was tough. As tough as a nickel steak and his hands were big. As big as plates of BBQ ribs and twice as greasy. Which made me mad. Real mad. So mad I could taste it. But I still cracked a smile.
(Leans against the wall as he takes out a cigarette)
Jake Smith (CONT.)
The down side of being a detective is that The D.A. are after you, Lieutenant OHara is after you, Big Ed is after you. And Then there is this heel named Harry, I didnt like his face. When he said he was called Harry, I didnt like his name either. While back when I was first assigned this case, he told me I wasnt working on this case anymore, he fired me, but the thing is I havent fired me. So, Im still on the case. Therefore, I need to crack this case. (Put his cigarette on the floor, then massage with the bottom of his shoe.)
Jake Smith (CONT.)
I cannot stop thinking about this one particular case that I couldnt crack; it involved a young girl who was raped and murder in the hands of a drooling goon. Seeing her body on the floor made me realise that there was a killer out there. . . and it was my job to find him.
(Take out another cigarette.)
Jake Smith (CONT.) The thing is this is a rotten town, with a lot of rotten people, like Big Cheese in it. And I cannot rest till I crack it.
(He hears someone screaming drops his cigarette and runs toward the screaming.)
