Research Project Status Reports gid tala th Tor Mr. E, A, Vassallo Project Status Reports prepared by the Division Managers are attached, Some of the highlights for October are given below, ANALYTICAL DIVISION The development of new and improved analytical procedures for tobacco and smoke constituents (Project 122) 1s coutinuing. Experimental work has been completed on an analysis for the tobacco additives plperonat, vanillin and ethyl vanillin, Methods for monosodium glutamate analysis are being evaluated. BASIC SCIENCES DIVISTON An instrument has been developed for measurement of smoke particle size. Studies are nov in progress to increase the accuracy of the measurements vith spectal attention directed to the procedure for obtaining smoke samples. The instrument will be used to measure particle size of enoke from competitive brand cigarettes and from the C-l filter. Automation of the instrument for measuring the puffing of tobacco has been completed. BIOLOGICAL DIVISION Work for Penick & Ford, utd. Spectal effort is being directed tovard production of cells to be supplied for a large-scale isonerization at Cedar Rapids. Also, every possible emphasis is being placed on reuse of cells in the further improvement of the isomera: process for the production of the glucose-fructose syrup. ‘Two 100-gallon batches of glucose-fructose syrups were prepared enzymatically for clean-up studies at Product Development and for use in feeding trials. The conversion of com syrup to glucose-fructose syrup has been accomplished using cell-free enzyme obtained from lysozyme treatnent. J, Reynolds Industries, tn The potential hypocholesteremic compound SRR4A, reported in Septenber, has been studied for possible deleterious effects upon cholesterol blosyn- thesis; prelisinary results are encouraging in that formation of compounds such as desnosterol was not indicated. ‘Three structurally related compounds prepared by the Chemical Division show diuretic activity in screening studies. Screening of new compounds and evaluation of those compounds showing desirable biological activity continues. Mork for R. J. Reynolds Foods, Inc. Reproductble results have been obtained in producing good quality mung bean sprouts by use of carefully controlled soaking teaperature combined with suttable contact time with root inhibitor and suitable soaking time. A study 4 in progress on production of a fermented soybean food product, CHEMICAL DIVE: Mork for R, J, Reynolds Tobacco Company. Cigarettes have been prepared from homogenized unaged tobacco; organoleptic evaluation of the product was encouraging. Extensive biological and chenical studies will be made on the smoke from homogenized tobacco cigarettes. ‘The exploratory study of new procedures for puffing of tobacco provided data for tvo patent applications. Present efforts include detalled study of new and promising puffing processes. ‘The Research Department bas collaborated with the Mechanical Development, Product Development snd Legal Departments iu work on the C-1 filter, The lung retention studies in humans is being expanded to accomodate evaluation of the C-1 filter and competitive brand cigarettes within the shortest possible time period, Controlled release nicotine complexes are being prepared for toxicity determination and for evaluation in edible products designed as cigarette substitutes, A simplified method for production of large crushable capsules which would serve to add flavor to low tar and "zero tar" cigarettes is being studied. 2095 09705Mork for Penick & Ford, Ltd. ‘The procedure for benzyl starch preparation has been evaluated to obtain data for optimization of plant operations. Efforts directed tovard solution of benzyl starch vaste pollution problems have included studses of benzyl alcohol destruction by ozone and by hypechlorite. Removal of benzyl alcohol from waste waters by extraction with organte solvents and by distillation is under study. Work for R. J. Reynolds Industries, Inc. The prevention of sugar sand formation in pure maple syrups is under investigation, Literature and source studies are undervay relative to the flavor components of selected food aromas.
