CASABLANCA
(1942)

THE MEOW MEOWS

MUST-SEE MOVIES
Movies that you should check
out in your free time.

Set in World War 2, Casablanca

follows the story of Rick Blaine
(Humphrey Bogart) and his old flame
Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman). Rick runs
the most elite nightclub and bar in
Casablanca, where refugees from all
over Europe have flocked to to escape
the horrors of World War 2. One of Ricks regular customers,
Ugarte, comes to visit him and entrusts him letters of transit, which
were taken from two German couriers who were just recently found
dead. This event is the catalyst to his reunion with his past lover,
Ilsa.
Casablanca is a must-see movie not simply because it is a classic,
but also because of the top-notch acting and grandeur the film brings.
It can make you swoon, gasp and leave you speechless and
breathless. It will pull your heartstrings and make you want to watch
it againand again and again. Nuff said.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE

(2000)

Set in 1960s Hong Kong, In The Mood

For Love, one of Wong Kar Wais
greatest masterpieces and one of Asian
cinemas most precious gems, revolves
around the lives of Mr. Chao (Tony
Leung) and Mrs. Chan (Maggie
Cheung). It starts with them becoming
neighbours by chance and the discovery
of their respective spouses affairswith
one another. In their attempt to
understand how the affair started, they
investigate and reenact all the possible scenarios, only to find
themselves falling for each other.

(1) 2001: A Space Odyssey

2001 is perhaps the greatest sci-fi
flick of all time. You better watch
out, Interstellar.

(2) Fantastic Mr. Fox

Love, love, love it! One of the best
animated films Ive seen in a while
and Wes Anderson can do no wrong.

(3) The Raid: Redemption

This is a must-see for all action
movie junkies. The fight scene are
out of this world, hands-down

THE MEOW MEOWS

Perhaps what makes this movie so beautiful is the simplicity and, bluntly speaking, the mundanity of the
plot. That is its strong point, and what really blew me away. It successfully conveyed the subtlety and the
power of love, of how, as Mr. Chow said, it can just creep up on you without you even noticing.
The cinematography is truly a work of art. The scenery is raw and realistic; the colours are bright and
vibrant and dream-like.
I highly recommend this movie. You wont regret it, and you can trust me on that.

FEATURE FILM

MILA (2001)

By: Michaela Dy, Local Movie Correspondent

Mila Cabangon (Maricel Soriano) is a grade 3

public school teacher who loves children dearly.
She would help them with their problems and
listen to their stories, but no one really knew of
Milas own struggles. After the teachers strike,
she was in dire need of money. She also found out
that her boyfriend (Piolo Pascual) was a drug
addict who sold their possessions in order to
acquire more drugs. Wandering the streets of
Ermita, Mila made a new life for herself. She
became contented of simply selling cigarettes and coffee in the streets while she taught the street children
during her free time. She also made friends with the prostitutes living there. She was glad with her life here
even if she didnt have a home; she would sleep in the streets with only a mat and a blanket to keep her
warm. Mila died os poverty, but she will never be forgotten. Meanwhile, the government still wont give
the wage increase to its public school teachers and continued to oppress them.
Mila will surely serve as an inspiration to many teachers and students. The government may continue to
suppress these teachers, but they still keep filling our heads with knowledge. They have made so much
sacrifices for us and sometimes we don;t even see it. Mila understood that her purpose in life was to teach
even if there was no pay; just to see her students succeed was enough to bring a smile on her lips. In return,
we must take the knowledge our teachers have given us and use it to succeed, make a difference in the
world, and make them proud.
