Faragalli AUTHORED MEMORANDA Course notes and calculator only .ce Engineering: MAAE3202A&B Students MUST count the number of pages in this examination question paper before beginning to write, and report any discrepancy immediately to @ proctor. This question paperhas 6 pages This examination question paper MAY bbe taken from the examination room In addition to this question paper, students require: an examination booklet yes X no ‘aScantron sheet yes I no X This examination has TWO parts, (A) and (B), in separate booklets. You must answer all the questions in Part (A) booklet and hand it in together with your answer booklet(s) for Part (B). NOTE: This is Part (B) of the examination. 1. Answer any THREE questions and indicate the questions on the cover page of the examination answer booklet. 2 Only the first THREE questions will be marked if more are answered. 3. All the questions carry equal marks 4. The maximum total marks for Part (B) is No enquiries on the interpretation of the questions will be entertained during the examination. If there is any doubt, state the assumptions you have made in answering them. MAAE 3202 Mechanics of Solids Final Examination - Part B December 2014 1. A pressurised fluid flows from one part of a machinery to another through a thi walled steel pipe of 25 mm external radius and 1 mm wall thickness. The ends of this pipe may be considered as being restrained from axial displacement. Due 10 misalignment of the attachments at its ends, the pipe carries a torque of 45 Nm when installed. The maximum pressure of the fluid is 5.2 MPa (a) Check if yielding will occur in the wall of this pipe, assuming the von criterion. Use the Mohr’s circle for the stress analysis (b) Iftwo strain gauges are to be used to measure the largest and smallest values of the direct strains in the wall at the maximum pressure, at what orientations with respect to the cylinder axis should they be mounted on its outer surface? What are the corresponding values of these strains? ises For the steel: Young's modulus E= 200 GPa Poisson’s ratio Yield stress MAAE 3202 Mechanics of Solids Final Examination - Part B December 2014 2, A simply-supported beam of uniform cross-section is subjected to the vertical loads through the centroid of the section as shown in Figure Q2(a). The cross-section is shown in Figure Q2(b) with its dimensions (in mm). (a) Using the Mohr's circle, determine the principal moments of area of the cross- section (b) Determine where the maximum bending moment oceurs along the span of the beam. Indicate on a sketch of the cross-section, the direction of the moment vector there. (c) Calculate the orientation of the neutral axis and also show it on the sketch. (a) Calculate the maximum compressive bending stress in the cross-section and show the point where it occurs. For the cross-section, the area properties with respect to the vertical and horizontal centroidal axes are as follows: 982 x 10° mm* 806 x 10° mm* | 1.634 x 10° mm" | h, 29 om —e} @ (b) Figure Q2 va MAAE 3202 Mechanics of Solids Page 4 Final Examination - Part B December 2014 3. A frame ABC ina structural system is built-in at A and is subjected to the vertical load P as shown in Figure Q3. A requirement in the design is that the end Cis permitted to displace only in the vertical direction. The frame has a uniform cross- section of flexural rigidity EJ. (a) Using Castigliano's theorem, determine the reaction at the support C. (b) What is the vertical displacement at C under the external load 2? nswer in terms of P, L and EL Express your ure Q3 oe MAAE 3202 Mechanies of Solids Final Examination - Part B December 2014 4, A compound cylinder is to be designed for carrying an abrasive chemical under high pressure. It is comprised of @ relatively thick tungsten-carbide liner fitted into a steel cylinder of 40 mm intemal radius and 80 mm outer radius. The inner radius of the liner is 35 mm. The maximum permissible pressure of the fluid is 150 MPa and at this value, a critical requirement is that tensile stresses must not be present in the liner due to the brittle nature of the material (a) Determine if shrink-fit is necessary. If affirmative, what is the minimum radial interference between the mating surfaces of the liner and the stee! cylinder? The axial stresses in the cylinders are negligible. (b) What is the factor of safety against yielding in the steel cylinder under the above limiting conditions, assuming the maximum shear siress yield criterion? Answer both Parts of this question. Part 000 rpm. It has a erties of ‘A superalloy steel is being considered for a flywheel to run at 3 uniform thickness of 25 mm and a diameter of 200 mm. The material prop the steel are as follows: Young's modulus, £ = 207 GPa: Poisson's ratio, v = Density, p = 7830 kg/m*; Yield stress, 0)=700 MPa. (a) What are the maximum hoop stress and the change in diameter of the flywheel at the operating speed? (b) Determine the rotational speed at which yielding first occurs according to the maximum shear stress criterion? Part (ID) A force P = 5 kN acts on the web of an aluminium alloy beam as shown in Q3. The thickness of both the web and the fla 5 mm, and all the other dimensions of the cross-section are as indicated in the figure, A trainee engineer had been tasked to determine the position where the force should be applied so that the beam will be subject to pure bending action: he had calculated it to be at a 250 mm. To the alarm of his supervisor, when the beam is in service, twisting 0 the cross-section is clearly evident. (a) What is the torque that the beam is also subjected to at this load position? (b) What is the angle of twist per unit length of the beam? The shear modulus of the aluminium alloy, G=27 GPa.
