Essay guidelines
Essay structure
1. Title
Usually, it takes the format of a question.

2. Introduction
a. State your thesis; take your main idea and pin it down in a clear, coherent
statement.
b. Show where the focus of your essay lies.
c. Capture the readers attention.
d. Use short, assertive sentences.
e. Remove any irrelevant information.
3. Body
a. Present in detail the idea set up in the Introduction.
b. Use arguments that support your view.
c. Present your points in a logical flow; they should follow one from another and
indicate a progression.
d. 1 idea = 1 paragraph!
e. Answer why you think that and why do you think that the piece of evidence you
bring in supports your argument.
4. Conclusion
a. Restate your thesis in different words as to include the arguments in the Body.
b. Sum up your idea in 1 paragraph.
c. Do not introduce new ideas and/or new evidence!
5. Bibliography

Plagiarism is unacceptable in an essay; it is a grave academic offense and may result in a failing
grade. Plagiarism means taking someone elses work or ideas and presenting them as your own.
Do not use other peoples words without quoting them. Use quotation marks when you illustrate

your points with other peoples words. Do not use other peoples ideas (even if you dont use the
actual words they have used when they have expressed those ideas!!!) without citing their work.
This, too, qualifies as plagiarism. When you paraphrase, make sure that you use your own words
and phrase structuring; incorrect paraphrase is still a form of plagiarism.
