CONCATENATED HIJA'IYAH LETTERS AND NON CONCATENATED HIJA'IYAH

LETTERS FOR STANDARD 2 PRIMARY STUDENTS OF
SEKOLAH KEBANGSAAN SUNGAI PAPAN

ABSTRACT
This study is about solving the problem in recognition of hija'iyah letters both concatenated and nonconcatenated. A number of 25 standard 2 students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Papan, Kota
Tinggi Johor were selected as the subjects for this study. The objective of this study is to increase
students skills in recognizing concatenated hija'iyah letters and non concatenated hija'iyah letters.
Most of the students are able to recognize the single hija'iyah letters but when students were asked to
construct a phrase or a word from hija'iyah letters, apparently majority of them unable to write with
proper usage of concatenated and non concatenated hija'iyah letters even though the spelling is
correct. A method called "BAPADECAN" (Baca, Pandang, Dengar dan Cantum) was developed in
this study to overcome these problem. Early stage of this study were done by evaluating students
work book, interview, formative assessment, monthly assessment, mid semester examination and pre
assessment. Later, this method were applied in classroom twice a week whereby students will read,
observe, listen and construct a phrase or a word from those concatenated and non concatenated
hija'iyah letters. Later, post assessment, interview and observation in classroom were done to evaluate
the efficacy of "BAPADECAN" method. Based on the interview and classroom observation, students
showed interest in learning and they are able to recognize the concatenated and non concatenated
hija'iyah letters. In addition, the post assessment scores were higher as compared to the pre
assessment scores. Thus, "BAPADECAN" method is advisable for learning and teaching for standard
2 of SK Sungai Papan in recognizing the hija'iyah letters both concatenated and non concatenated.
