This guide provides you with information on the Tekla Structures installation, in addition to
Quick Installation Guide, a card included in the installation DVD box.
The topics in this guide are:
A note like this directs you to more information in the online help, which
you can use once you have installed Tekla Structures.
FLEXnet licensing
system
Tekla Structures uses a new licensing system, FLEXnet Publisher License Management (further
FLEXnet). FLEXnet is an activation-based licensing system provided by a company called
Macrovision.
In an activation-based licensing system you need to:
point each client computer with Tekla Structures to the license server.
You can create user groups with different access rights for different Tekla Structures
configurations.
You can handle licenses efficiently. You can activate licenses on a license server in a local
area network. When you start Tekla Structures, a license is checked out from the license
server. When you close Tekla Structures, the license is checked in and it is available for
another user.
You have multiple options for managing licenses. You do not have to activate all of your
licenses on the same license server. You can activate half of your licenses on a common
server and the rest locally on each users laptop, for example. You can easily change the
location of the licenses by deactivating them on one license server and activating on another
server.

download the license server installation package from Tekla Extranet.

Select the number of licenses for activation from the Activate list box. You can also type
the number.
You do not need to activate all the licences at once. You can activate part
of the licenses now and part of the licenses later on some other computer,
for example. Different configurations and different versions need to be
selected for activation separately, but when selected, they can be activated all at once.

After successful activation the License Activated Successfully dialog box opens. Click
OK.
The activated licenses are displayed under the Activated Licenses area.
With administrator rights, click Start > All Programs > Tekla Structures Licensing >
LMTOOLS.

Type the host name of the license server in the Server address field.
You can type the host name of the server (for example, @server_host_name) or the
complete address of the host name (for example,
server_host_name.mycompany.com). You can also type the TCP/IP port (for
example, 27001@server_host_name.mycompany.com).

If you want to check which licenses are available on the license server, click Check
licenses.
Click OK to start Tekla Structures 14.0.

Modifying existing
installation
If you wish to modify your existing installation, simply re-run the installation wizard. You can:
When the installation wizard asks you to select the destination folder, select the same folder
where you have your existing Tekla Structures installed. The installation wizard detects your
existing installation and asks you how to proceed.
If your version of Tekla Structures is other than the one specified in the
installation wizard, you can only perform a full re-installation.
15
Re-install (Full installation): Select this option if you want to add new add-on modules or
If you select this option, follow the prompts on the screen to re-install Tekla Structures.
Add environments and languages: Select this option if you want to add environments
and/or interface languages to the existing installation.
16
Select the environments you wish to add. Your existing environments are marked with an
asterisk.
When prompted to select languages, select the languages you wish to add and then follow
the prompts on the screen to finish the installation.

You can use the initialization files in the same manner as batch files. You can create customerspecific initialization files that include custom settings particular to each customer, a company
and/or a single project. A company can also create custom initialization files for multi-user mode
if needed.
Initialization files have the following restrictions:
If EXIST and if NOT EXIST statements are supported, but you cannot use other if
statements in initialization files.
You can call other initialization files, but you cannot call executable files in initialization
files.

If you continue to use batch files, you need to check whether the
initialization files include any changes that you need to include in the
batch files. You have to do this every time you upgrade to a new
version of Tekla Structures. The installation does not copy or update
any batch files.
If you continue to use batch files, you need to remove or rename the
initialization files. You cannot use batch files together with initialization files.
25
If you want to continue using batch files, you need to make the following changes to the default
setup:
Usage
1.
Copy the folder structure from the previous version of Tekla Structures.
a
Create a new folder called bat under ..\TeklaStructures\14.0.

the example below.

To learn how using project and firm folders makes upgrading easier, see
Project and firm folders in the online help.
Do not use the system folder to store customized files. You will avoid
having problems or doing a lot of unnecessary work when you upgrade.
If you have customized previous versions without using firm or project folders, you will need to
transfer that information to Tekla Structures 14.0. We strongly recommend that you now use
firm or project folders. Working through the following questions will help you transfer all the
information you need.
28
Click File locations and check that the following variables point to the correct folders:
Variable
Folder contents
XS_FIRM
XS_PROJECT
XS_TEMPLATE_DIRECTORY
XS_PROFDB
XS_DRIVER
Alternatively you can add the variables to the user.ini file using any
text editor.
See Setting variables in the online help.
29
Yes: If you have used variables in files other than user.ini, copy and paste your modified
entries to the Tekla Structures 14.0user.ini file or to the Advanced options dialog box
(Tools > Options > Advanced Options...).
To learn how using project and firm folders makes upgrading easier, see
Project and firm folders in the online help.

Have you saved any dialog box properties to use with the Load command,
either manually or using Save Defaults?
No: Nothing to do, please go to the next question...
Yes: If you have used firm or project folders to store these files, you do not need to do anything.
If not, copy the relevant files to Tekla Structures 14.0.
See File extensions in the online help for a complete list of dialog box file

Multi-user server
installation
This section is for users who set up and maintain the Tekla Structures
multi-user system.
A Tekla Structures multi-user system runs on a TCP/IP network and consists of:
You can use the same Tekla Structures server computer for all multi-user models. However, if
you run only one server instance on that server, you cannot restart the server in one job without
disturbing the other models. Therefore, if you are familiar with TPC/IP ports and Tekla
Structures shortcuts, you can easily set up several server instances running on the same computer
but using different ports. When you have a separate server instance for each multi-user model,
you can shut one server down without disturbing the other projects.
This requires that you know how to check which ports are available. You also need to create one
shortcut for each server instance. For example, if you have one server running on port 1238 (the
default port) and another one running on port 8080, you need to create the following shortcuts:
C:\TeklaStructures\MultiUserServer\2.2\xs_server.exe servername 1238
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TeklaStructuresServer
C:\TeklaStructures\MultiUserServer\2.2\xs_server.exe servername 8080
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TeklaStructuresServer
The first shortcut starts the server on port 1238, and the other one on port 8080. When you create
a new multi-user model, you must enter the server name and port in the New dialog box. For
example, if the server name is teklaserver and the port is 8080, you must type
teklaserver,8080. If you are using the default port (1238), you do not have to define the
port number.
33
Do not change the server of a multi-user model if any users are currently
working on the model.
See Multi-user mode in the online help for more information on setting
up and using Tekla Structures in multi-user mode.
Insert the Tekla Structures installation DVD into the DVD-ROM drive of the server
computer.
On the DVD menu, select Installation > Install Tekla Structures Multi-user Server.
3.
Select the language to use when installing the server program, and then click OK.
4.
Follow the steps in the InstallShield Wizard. After each step, click Next to continue.
5.
In Select Multi-user Server, type in the name or IP address of the server computer.
By default, the server computer runs on port 1238. If you want to change the port, define
the port after the server name (for example, teklaserver,8080).
34
Use the IP address of the server computer only if the IP address is static.
35
Keep the Tekla Structures Server window open. If you close the
window or log out from the server computer, the Tekla Structures server
will shut down.
Users should save their working models to the master model before the
Tekla Structures server is shut down. If the server closes down prior to
them saving their working models, simply restart it, then have users save
their working models to the master model.
