Nationalism After winning


the War of 1812, Americans felt
more unified as a nation, more
patriotic. This was called The
Era of Good Feelings
Sectionalism At the same
time, different regions of the
country had different
economies and motivations.
They increasingly disagreed
with other sections of the
country creating a tension
dividing the country, too.

Sectionalism: The
placing of the
interests of ones
own region ahead of
the interests of the
nation as a whole.

Economic changes in the US created 3 separate regions:

Northeast- wealth was based on manufacturing and trade


South- wealth was based on cotton and slavery
West- settlers wanted cheap land and good transportation

Sectionalism becomes a major issue when Missouri applied for statehood in


1817.

Monroe stated/warned:

Americas were closed to further colonization


European efforts to reestablish colonies would
be considered dangerous to our peace and
safety
Promised that the United States would stay out
of European affairs.

The Monroe Doctrine showed that the


United States saw itself as a world
power and protector of Latin America.
