Baoji Engineering Hydraulic Components Plant is a specialized manufacturer with
high technology in the ficld of hydraulic products in northwest of China. Founded in 1993
and from then on, in order to meet the customer's requirement, innovating endlessly, the
plant has cooperated with Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xian Science and Industrial University
and developed various standard or non-standard hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, and
super-high-pressure, high-pressure and medium-low-pressure hydraulic system, hydraulic
station, hydraulic machine and hydraulic test platform. We can also design and manufacture
various hydraulic components, hydraulic system and hydraulic machinery according the
customer's needs. Nine (9) back-up products for Ocean Drilling Rig under Huizhou Project
of Baoji Petroleum Machinery Co.,Ltd. are authorized by (ABS) of U.S.A. The plant passed
through IS09001 Quality System Authentication from China IS09001 International
Certification Center for Quality System.
The plant now has a staff of 190 with long-term professional experiences, of which
1B are senior Engineers and technicians. The plant is equipped with more than 110 sets key
equipment and various special equipment to make hydraulic products, such as extended
horizontal lathe, extended horizontal grinder, oilstone grinder, hydraulic machine and test
devices. We can design and manufacture Hydraulic Cylinders: Max. Bore Diameter:680mm;
‘Max. Stroke:4m; Max. Working Pressure:3SMpa, We can design and manufacture hydraulic
station, cylinder and system in various pressure and capacity in accordance with customer's
needs. The advanced automatic machining, refined quality system is up to domestic

1. General
‘As an auxiliary equipment for petroleum artesian well mechanism, YM—1611B1
Hydraulic Cathead can be used with tongs. The main application is automatically
loosening and tightening for drilling pipes, drilling collars and casings on land or
offshore drilling. By means of hydraulic power, the output torque of the hydraulic
cathead can be adjusted easily according to the size of the pipes. Comparing with the
mechanical type, the hydraulic cathead can reduce the labor burden of drilling
workers and drilling cost and also ensure the workers safely carrying out drilling
working.

3. Structure and Working Principle
3.1 Structure: The cathead mainly consists of head crown block and hydraulic cathead.
Hydraulic power source separately backups.3.2 Working principle: Fix the end of steel rope of cathead on the tail handle of the
tongs arm; Connect the inlet and outlet line in the cathead cylinder. Operate
hydraulic valve group to extend the piston rod of cylinder. Via the traveling and
crown block, the steel rope rotates the tongs at an angle to finish loosening and
tightening operation. When resetting is needed, operate the handle of control valve
‘to retum the piston rod, the steel rope will reset by retum-spring and ready for the
next operation.

4 Operation
4.1 See Exterior Structure Drawing for Cathead Assembling
As the backup part of the drilling rig, the installation and method have been
considered in the general design of drilling rig,
4.2 The connecting of cathead arid tongs is shown as follows:

4.2.1 Fix retainer and spring on the steel rope, and then press the knot at the end of the
rope, connected to the tail handle of tongs.
4.2.2 When the cylinder is at the fully drawing position and the tongs is at pulling
position, pull the other end of rope to tighten whole rope and put into the hole of
wedge with ring shape, then put the wedge in. Tighten the end of the rope and letthe wedge put into the hole of wedge.
4.2.3 Tightly clip the tongs on the pipe column Cor fix the tail end of tongs with
rope) drive the piston rod outside to tighten the wedge more. Feich the wedge out
and adjust again and cut off unwanted rope if the length rope is not suitable.
4.2.4 Push the spring to the baffle, compress approx.300mm from the original tength
toward the cylinder, and tighten the rope clip.
4.3 Installation of control box
Directly install control box on the rigid frame near operator’s console in favor of
drilling operation.
4.4 Operation
4.4.1 Switch on Hydraulic source, select the length of tongs arm according to the
required loosening and tightening torque. Check the corresponding working
pressure of hydraulic system on the Table to adjust overflow valve. The value
displayed on the manometer is the required pressure.
4.4.2 Operate manual change valve of control box to extend the piston rod from the
cylinder. The extended rod pulls the tongs to carry out tightening working. Retract
the piston rod after working
4.4.3 The value of every loosening and tightening is displayed ftom the manometer of
control box. The accurate value is displayed by manometer when the angle between
steel rope and tong is 90°.Repeat locating for several times to ensure the accurate
value.
4.4.4 There are some air remained in the valve and soft hose at first assembly. Operate
‘the manual change valve to extend and retract the rod to and fro to drive the air out
of the system.
5 Attention
5.1 The operator must keep in mind to immediately operate manual change valve tostop oil supply when the piston arrives the end of route.
5.2 The rope pull selected from the table must match the rated loading of tongs. It is
forbidden that the later is bigger than the former in case of accident.
5.3 Staff must be away from steel rope in case of accident caused by the rope broken.
when the cathead is working.
5.4 Replace the rope after long period use.
6 Maintenance
6.1 Withdraw the piston rod of cathead thoroughly in case that the exposed rod eroded
and damage the sealing parts. Frequently check the oil leakage around the piston
rod. Timely replace the sealing parts and recover the leakage position if leakage is
found.
6.2 Frequently smear the rope retum spring with anticorrosion oil. Periodically check
the rope no fold, no corrosion, no wearing and no broken. Immediately replace the
rope if any of the defaults found,
6.3 Frequently check the leakage and broken on high-pressure hose and joint. Renew
or replace if necessary.
6.4 Lubricate the grease vent on the traveling and crown block before every use.
