This development has ‘increased the demand for automatic conirol systems, and in particular for Programmable Controllers that combine both increased performance and cost-effectiveness. The TSX21 is a new, compact Programmable Controller that is cost-effective even for small systems the equivalent of 15-20 relays. WHY PROGRAMMABLE CONTROL A Programmable Controller or P.C. is a multi-purpose device that replaces relays and electronic control systems, It achieves these functions using standard hardware that is programmed for any particular application. The programme can be easily modified at any time therefore reducing design and commissioning costs. A P.C, can be completely reprogrammed for a different task should the machine or process become obsolete. The main features and benefits of P.C. control are as follows: Feature Solid State Benefit Increased reliability, decreased downtime Reduction of fault diagnosis time Increased flexibility Fault Indication Programmable Logic Standard Hardware Reduction of spares holding Ease of Programming No special training required ln addition to the above, the TSX21 also offers the loilowing features and benefits: Feature Rugged Construction Programmable Input/Output Step by Step Monitoring Compact Size Ease of Connection REPROM Memory Analogue and Crystal Timers Powerful Programming Functions Benefit Able to withstand severe industrial conditions Increased flexibility in design and operation Allows each stage of machine cycle or process to be monitored to further reduce downtime Reduces cabinet space, saves costs Permits rapid connection/ disconnection No requirement for battery back-up Permits external adjustment of timers without using Programming console Simplification of complex sequence control systems. 3. APPLICATIONS 1 INTRODUCTION The TSX21 P.C. can be used in a very wide variety of applications that include the following: 4, DESCRIPTION Compact Rugged Environmental Protection ' Machine tool, drilling, grinding, milling Conveyors, belt, roller 1 1! Packaging, shrink-wrap, bottling 1 Food process, ovens, mixers — Palletizers, binding machines, stackers — General mechanical handling, hoists, lifts i Injection moulding machines — Alarm systems It Die casting machines 1 Pump control, ventilation - Press control — Furnace control Self propelled devices, cranes, trolleys — Compressor contrat The compact size of the TSX21 (216 x 127 x 110mm) allows it to be housed in most types of cabinets or cubicles, or even to the incorporated in the structure of the machine to be controlled. The TSX21 is enclosed in a rugged aluminium case and no further protection is normally required. It is highly resistant to shock and vibration and can be installed on a moving device such as a crane or stacker. The rugged case of the TSX21 protects against water and dust (IP52) and provides all the necessary heat dissipation for operation at ambient temperatures of up to 60°C. A temperature sensor within the TSX21 can be used to switch an external tan and thus permit operation at temperatures of up to 90°C. | } 1 INTRODUCTION ” Ease of Installation Programmable Input/Output Electronic Protection Error Checking Status Display Plant wiring is simplified by the provision of up to 4 connectors which locate at the base of the TSX21. Each of the moulded, plug-in connectors is equipped with 2.5m of flat, colour-coded ribbon cable. The TSX21 is mounted vertically and secured by 4 M4 screws that locate in ‘keyholes’ for speed of construction. The unique programmable input/output structure of the TSX21 can be adapted to suit a wide range of I/O configurations without changing hardware. This permits, for example, a single 32 point I/O card to be used for any system from 16 In/16 Out to 24 In/8 Out in any ratio. Inputs. Filters provide a high level of noise immunity and ensure satisfactory operation in harsh industrial environments, Outputs Ashort circuit on a group of Outputs will set all Outputs within the group to the Off state, and illuminate an LED on the particular group. The programmable Input/Outputs are current limited to ‘increase filament life when driving external lamps Power Supply The supply voltage to the TSX21 is constantly monitored and a threshold circuit ensures operation within tolerance. The external power supply is common to both Inputs and Outputs and can be backed up if necessary by a battery to safeguard internal variables, Awatch-dog control monitors correct operation of the Controller and in the event of a fault will halt the programme, turn all outputs Off and illuminate an LED. The status of every Input/Output is monitored and displayed by LED's. In addition, analogue timers and up to 64 programme steps are also displayed. 5. 1 INTRODUCTION OPERATION TSX21 = Pavers =) @ c 2 ao i ep eee © <2 rer Lt Taperecorcer Principle The TSX21 constantly scans the status of all Inputs — push-buttons, limit switches, proximity detectors, etc. The status of these Inputs Is compared with a stored programme and Outputs are turned On or Off depending upon the result. Programming TSX21 programming is very simple and Is quickly learnt whether or not the User has previous experience with P.C. or other electronic systems. The TSX21 programme can be entered using a variety of methods including relay, logic, Boolean or Functional Diagram. a) Relay Scheme Se) — eerie b) LogicDiagram = & 71 ¢) Boolean Y=(a+b)c Equation d) Functional Diagram qseeesteeee oh | ——— 1 INTRODUCTION 6. In addition this unit incorporates a V24 serial interface to allow a cassette recording or print-out to be made when connected to a suitable device (e.g. Sanyo ZE601 Microcorder or Texas printer). The CCP 0101 console includes a 2K RAM memory for programme development. Once the programme is completed it is transferred into the EPROM memory that forms part of the TSX21 P.C., the console may then be used to programme other TSX21 P.C.'s. If itis necessary to _ modify the original EPROM programme at a later date then a UV source is available on the console to facilitate programming. The operation of of the CCP 0101 console is now described in detail. MODE SELECTOR KEYS (Ref 6 - Pg 18) These keys are used in conjunction with the programme selector keys (.4) to oO control the overall operation of the CCP 0101 console. The direction of information flow is indicated by LED's and the example shown depicts information flowing from the P.C. (Automate) via the console to the peripheral port. It should be noted that the EPROM memory can only be programmed when located within the console. Therefore the figure opposite one QO) ra, _ a" indicates the correct direction of flow Oo IC) when transferring the contents of the x °. RAM memory to EPROM. PROGRAMME SELECTOR KEYS (Ref 7 - Pg 18) RRO TRI TAME These keys select the type of programme O O function to be achieved, the example shown indicates that ‘search’ has been (6) sO) bs ©) selected. aaa ‘ene 4 PROGRAMMING CONSOLE The Programme and Mode selector keys are operated together as explained in 4.3 and 4.4 to achieve the desired function. It is not critical to follow the specified order of selection provided the correct sequence is ultimately achieved. If the order is not followed then it will simply mean that additional selections may be necessary to achieve the desired programme mode. There are a large number of combinations that can be achieved for each programme selection. For example, a Compare function can be carried out in four different ways, e.g. tape to RAM, RAM to tape, ete. All the possible combinations are shown below, no others are possible. Before starting to programme, the following should be noted. a) b) °) d) e) An input reference, e.g. 200 may be used any number of times either as the equivalent of normally-open or normally-closed. The choice of open or closed contacts for plant wiring is normally determined by the standards adopted on the plant, e.g, N.C. for alarm contacts. Aworking variable 100-177 can be used as the equivalent of a control relay. An output address may be allocated once only, i.e. preceded only once by the instruction (=), for example =223. However, the presence of the output can be tested internally any number of times, for example, 0233 as a maintain circuit. To avoid ambiguity, many of the circuits are shown with a relay equivalent circuit and graphical representation, €.g. 12 and 13. A number of circuits have a graphical representation only, e.g. 14. Inputs and outputs, e.g, 200, 201, 230, have been chosen to enable ease of simulation on Telemechanique demonstration equipment. 6 PROGRAMMING EXAMPLES —SEQUENTIAL LOGIC + SERIES/PARALLEL ’ L 200 a oe ——O: A 201 © 204 eactee A 208 = 230 3, WORKING VARIABLE (CONTROL RELAY) ‘ L 202 A 203 foam eosts gaaee ret ©) © 204 iz i A 207 = 100 — Working Variable _= O L 100 [ > A 205 = 232 etna Ox L 100 eee i A 206 = 233 4, MAINTAIN = L 203 ae ——_O O 233 - Maintain a =o we A 202 [-#— A 207 = = 233 5, MONOSTABLE (SWITCH ON) L 200 pose AN 0 il Rai wo = 100 —One-shot on switch ON |}; L 200 pulse length duration — 7 101 1scan 6 PROGRAMMING EXAMPLES 6.. A Functional Diagram provides a representation of a machine or process control as a number of easily defined stages. It is based on the operation of the plant itself and therefore does not require detailed knowledge of the electrical control system. For this reason itis easily understood by both designers and non-specialised plant personnel. The TSX21 incorporates a 64 stage, step-by-step monitor to facilitate rapid plant fault-finding. Installing the TSX21 P.C. is simple and easy; itis suggested though that the = following points be noted before commencing installation. 1, MECHANICAL The TSX21 Controller should be mounted using four M4 screws to locate in the keyhole slots provided at the rear of the housing, (The drawing template, page 42 can be used as a drilling guide). The Controller should be mounted vertically with the input/output connection sockets facing downwards. Generally it will be necessary to leave approximately 220mm of free space below the Controller in order to remove the memory card at any time. Alternatively, if tapped holes are used for the M4 locating screws, itis possible after disconnecting the |/O wiring to remove the complete Controller. The memory card may then be changed outside the cubicle and the Controller then replaced. Free air-space must always be left around the Controller to ensure adequate heat dissipation from the cooling fins, (Heat Rise 0.7 °C/watt in free air). The status of all inputs and outputs can be readily monitored if the TSX21 cubicle door is fitted with a transparent cover. 2, ELECTRICAL Neither the RAM or EPROM memory cards should be removed without first switching off the 24V supply to the inputs and outputs. In addition the programming console should also be switched off when inserting/removing a RAM card Failure to do so may result in loss of programme, system maiiunction or damage to electronic circuits. All wiring to the TSX21 should be checked before connection to ensure correct polarity. The Input/Output connectors to the Controller should not be inserted or removed without switching off the 1/O power supply. The power supply voltage should be checked prior to switching on to ensure the no-load voltage does not exceed 30V de, and that the full-load voltage does not fall below 16V de, Itis generally advisable to programme the TSX21 Controller in the ‘off-line’ mode, i.e. no power applied to the Input/Output section. This is particularly important for safety reasons when the TSX21 is installed on the plant. If frequent programme changes are required during and after commissioning itis advisable to fita 13A socket within the TSX21 cubicle for the CCP 0101 programme console or ZE601 tape unit. 7 INSTALLATION PLANT WIRING PS. Input, output and power supply wiring connections to the Cannon DC-37 connector are shown on LJ Table 1 (Page 43). The general wiring arrangement “rsxai is as shown opposite. 4 TH inputs ‘OurPUTS SUPPLY VOLTAGE The 24V supply required for each Input/Output card is connected to the appropriate pin on each connector: Pin 2, 3, 20, 21 to (+): Pin 1 to (~). The power supply to the first Input/Output card (Position 1) also powers the Memory and Processor card; there is no internal 24V supply within the Controller. Therefore Position 1 Input/Output card must always be powered up even if I/O 200-237 are not immediately required. Each Input/Output card is protected against voltage peaks +40V and -1V. If voltage peaks outside these limits are present for > 1ms, then each card should be protected by a 10A quick blow fuse. OUTPUTS Although the continuous current from each output may be either 2A (Power) or 400mA (Programmable), the total current for each I/O card should not exceed 10A. The outputs from the TSX21 should be wired to (+) connections on the Load. The commons of all Loads may be wired together and connected to OV. The length of field wiring from the outputs is governed only by the acceptable volt drop for the particular load. Rapid switching of inductive loads can lead to thermal build-up if adequate seitling time is not allowed. Therefore, it is recommended that the settling time for the output is at least 20 times greater than the load time constant. INPUTS Inputs are driven from a nominal 24V voltage supply (16 and 30V do). This voltage should not exceed 30V as this will result in damage to the LED. indicators, Due to the low currents involved (3.2mA typical), input field wiring can be run considerable distances with only a small drop in signal. Up to 200m of control input wiring can be used without screening, but itis recommended that twisted pairs be used. 7 INSTALLATION 7.
