Summary: SVETLANA DIMITRIJEVI MARKOVI
URBAN DESIGN: ITS ROLE AND IMPORTANCE IN PRESERVING AND CREATING URBAN AREAS
Urban design has been established as a new discipline in many developed countries in the world in order to counteract
the adverse processes of devastation and dehumanization affecting urban spaces as a result of the aggressive impact of the
market. It is concerned with space quality in terms of design, form, function, safety etc. Urban design strategies involve
control measures aimed at ensuring interconnectedness and quality through patterns, enabling continuity between past and
present. With an ever more aggressive impact of the market, with normative plans and planners predominantly inclined
towards flexible, open-ended solutions, which frequently leads to outcomes exceeding the acceptable limits and infringing
upon valuable urban areas and structures, the need for establishing the discipline in Serbia becomes increasingly important.
By presenting the main aspects of urban design, its advantages and the conditions for its application, this paper hopes
to encourage broad professional debate on the usefulness of pursuing the discipline in Serbia.
