3 FLUID MECHANICS
A pump is used to elevate water from 5 m below center line. The water is pumped to 30 m above
the center line with flow rate around 3m3/h. A pipe, 45m in length, is used to flow the water from
pump to reservoir, with inner diameter 50mm. The flow also passes a fitting with equivalent
length 10m. Determine the head under assumption of incompressible fluid and temperature 200C)

A continue distillation is used to recover acetone from liquid waste. Feed flow (around 10,000
kg/h with minimum flow 70% of total flow) contains 10% (g/g) acetone in room temperature
(200C). It is aimed to have acetone with purity 98% (g/g) and liquid waste with acetone
concentration under 50 ppm. Practical reflux ration is achieved at 1.35 (three times minimum
reflux ratio). Using McCabe-Thiele method, theoretical stage is achieved at 14 with operating
line slope bottom is 3.9, and top is 0.75. Under assumption of flooding 85%, gas phase is
dominant, equivalent re-boiler 1 stage, column efficiency 60%, and pressure drop per plate is
