In my music magazine I have followed the normal conventions in music magazines
based on the rock/metal magazine, Kerrang.
For the way I developed and used conventions I included things such as: a bar codewhich is a legal requirement, a masthead, main cover lines, price, etc. However, to make my magazine more individual and stand out to my target audience I have differed some of these conventions. To begin with I changed where the masthead is normally situated to a different place. A masthead on a magazine is normally found in the top third of the page as it is easy to read and to stand out on the shelf so the buyer can easily distinguish it. Whereas my masthead is on the side of my front cover in the far right hand third, and is going down the side of the page, so the reader will have to read it downwards. I done this in hope to stand out as I have found no other magazine that has a masthead like this and that my target audience will find it intriguing and hopefully encourage them to purchase Fusion. Another convention challenged is the spot colour used through-out the magazine. In Kerrang, the spot colours used is red and yellow, I have somewhat followed this convention as I have used red on both my contents page and double page spread. Although, I changed this on my front cover as I have only used black and white with no other colour included. By doing this I am challenging the regular conventions for this genre to make it my own. By my front cover being monotone is offers more to both genders- male and female- instead of having one main colour which may stereotypically appeal to only one gender. My main image on my front cover does follow the conventions, for example it being a medium close up. But what I have found on Q and Kerrang is that for all their models used that have made it so the eyes make direct gaze to the reader which is an attempt to draw their readers in and feel is if the magazine is for them. I have made my image appear as if the model is looking up and out of the magazine and there is no direct eye contact. This is different to what would normally be found, and by my model looking up and out is also intriguing and I feels as if adds character to my music magazine.
