En la presente unidad, y en kas dos unidades siguientes, examinara diversos aspectos de la formacién de palabras en
inglés. Aqui empezara la practica con las palabras compuestas, concretamente con los nombres y los adjetivos compues
tos, tema que ya ha sido tratado en varias unidades anteriores,
En la seccidn de Accents of English de esta unidad tendra la oportunidad de escuchar el acento de una persona
procedente de Londres y el de otra procedente de New York, las ciudades mis populosas de Gran Bretaia y Estados
Unidos, respectivamente. La seccién de Extra reading, por su parte, le proporcionard informacién acerca de dichas
cciudades. Ademds, en la seccién de Written English podra realizar algunas préeticas de lectura y de escritura con textos
que giran en torno a programas de la televisién britinic:

Una caracteristica de la lengua inglesa es la formacién de los nombres compuestos mediante la simple colocacién de un
nombre delante de otro. Esta es una caracteristica compartida con otras lenguas. como el alemin, por ejemplo, pero.
hacuralmente, no con todas, ya que en muchas lenguas para expresar el mismo concepto que en inglés o atlemin se
expres con un nombre compuesto es necesario utilizar una frase con varias particulas de enlace. En la pagina 10S
aparecid una interesante serie de ejemplos cuando Lily decidi6 escuchar un poco de miisica mientras almorzaba
lunch almuerzo lunchtime hora det almuerzo lunchtime music mésica para la hora del almucrzo
Alencontrar este tipo de nombres compuestos en inglés, merece la pena tener presente un dato muy simple: la “palabra
clave” del nombre compuesto es la que figura en ultimo lugar; asi, lunehtime music designa, obviamente, un tipo de
iisica. Un ejemplo mas curioso lo proporcionan los dos siguientes nombres compuestos: a flower garden es la denomi
acion de un tipo de jardin (un jardin en el que crecen flores), mientras que a garden flower es Ia denominacién de un
tipo de flor (una flor que crece en jardines). Recordar este sencillo dato le ayudar a averiguar el significado de los
nombres compuestos que encuentre por vez primera.
Observaci6n.
En la secci6n de Grammar de la unidad 29 (pigs. 594 y 595) se comentaron algunos aspectos de
ortografia de los nombres compuestos. Se citaron, por ejemplo, palabras como:

Tal vez quiera refrescar su memoria revisando algunos de los comentarios efectuados en las dos paginas citadas. Estos
comentarios proporcionan una buena preparacion para el estudio de los nombres compuestos y se complementan con los

It’s a bit difficult to say. Some are usually
jen as two wards, like “hus stop”. for
example, Some usually have a hyphen,
‘ce-hockey”. Some are usually wri
word, like “seatbelt”.
Are there any rules?
Not really, You can see some compound nouns
written in all three ways. For example, what
do you call a shop that sells books?
