High school credit for Middle School

Continuing 8 Spanish and Continuing 8 French

1. In accordance with Board Policy effective July 2000, 8th grade students
who successfully complete Continuing 8 French or Continuing 8 Spanish
will, upon submitting a signed Request for Credit Application, receive high
school credit. The credit application will be sent home upon completion of
the class at the end of the school year.
2. For students who choose to receive credit, both semester grades will be recorded as part of the
students official high school transcript and will count in calculation of the high school grade point
average (GPA). Please note that quarter grades may differ from the end of semester grade.
3. Once recorded as part of the official high school transcript, neither the course nor the grades may
be changed or removed from that transcript.
4. Eighth grade students who successfully complete Continuing Spanish 8 or Continuing French 8
should enroll in the next level of study regardless of whether or not the student receives high school
credit. The students placement in level 2 or level 2.5 is not dependent upon high school credit being
awarded for Continuing Spanish 8 or Continuing French 8.
5. The students high school transcript will indicate that the course was taken in grade 8.
6. World language teachers strongly advise students to continue their FL study throughout the high
school years. Learning a second language cannot be equated to credits earned but rather to skills
accomplished and demonstrated. It takes four to six years of classroom study to develop proficient
communication skills. Students who interrupt their study early during the high school years may
need to repeat a beginning level language course as a college freshman because they have not
maintained their language skills well enough to test out or to place into higher level coursework.
7. All 8th grade Blue Valley students who complete world language in grade 8 will receive the
credit application form in the mail at the end of the school year in June. The form will list the
students semester grades. The SIGNED copy of the request for credit must be returned to the
students high school registrar by September 1. The form may be submitted as part of regular
fall enrollment.
8. Questions should be directed to your middle level world language teacher, your high school
counselor or Diane DeNoon/Education Services-World Languages at ddenoon@bluevalleyk12.org or
913-239-4101.
