Oppression of Women in Modern Society

In modern day society, women have gained numerous rights that many
would consider to be acceptable and fair. But in reality, women are still
oppressed by society as seen through the differences between incomes, the
forced marriages taking place around the world, and the objectification of
women through the media. First of all, womens income is lacking compared to
the income of men working in the same field. Some would say that women are
actually paid more than men, but this is only true if the woman has a higher
position than the man. Women who are teachers will almost always make more
than men who work as waiters in restaurants. When speaking of income of the
two genders in a specified field, it is quite clear that women make less than
men. For example, in the United States the field of medicine has a large gap
between income rates. Women in the field only make 67.6% of what men make,
with male surgeons averaging $2099 a week and female surgeons only
averaging $1418 a week. This difference in incomes shows how women are
being treated unfairly by the government, regulating said income. Furthermore,
there are still many countries around the world where women are forced into
marriages against their will. I have a friend in India who was recently forced into
an arranged marriage with a man she had no previous contact with. She often
complains that she is not happy with her relationship, because her husband
never pays attention to her needs, and due to this, she is suffering from
depression. Even though countries such as Canada and the U.S consider such
practice unorthodox, many third world countries regularly exercise the act of
forced marriage, condemning women to a life without love. Such things show
the oppression of woman in the current era, even after gaining a vast number of
rights in different regions of the world. In addition to this, women have become
mere objects in the eyes of the media. The movie Piranha is a perfect example
of the objectification of women through media. Multiple scenes in the movie,
women are shown with an increased amount of visible skin. This lack of clothing
will only allow men to perceive women as objects of intimacy, ignoring the fact
that they are also human beings with a unique nature and personality. Because
the media is displaying such an inappropriate image of women, men and also
other women will continue to judge the female population as objects or tools of
society. This shows how women are being treated unjustly or being oppressed by
the media of modern society. In conclusion, although women have gained a
number of rights in modern times, they are still put under difficult circumstances
and face oppression as seen through the income gap between genders, the
involuntary marriages, and the medias objectification of the female population.
