Mr. and Mrs.

Bixby were a couple who lived in a flat, in

New York. Mr. Bisby was a bored dentist who worked hard.
Once a month, his wife used to spend a weekend in
Baltimore to visit her old aunt. But, in fact, Mrs. Bixby was
having an affair with a man called the Colonel. One day,
after one of these visits, Mrs Bixby was waiting for the
train to come back home when she received a gift from the
Colonel, who apologised for ending the relationship. At
first, Mrs Bixby got mad because she had been seeing this
man for a long time, but quickly she got excited because the
gift was an extraordinary and expensive coat made of black
mink. Immediately she noticed that she couldn't explain her
husband the origin of the coat, so she prepared a plan. As
soon as she arrived at the city, she went to a pawnbroker
and pawned the coat for 50 dollars. She didn't want to put
any information on the ticket. Then she got home and she
told her hasband that she had found the pawn ticket on the
seat of a taxi. Mr. Bixby decided to go himself to recover
the object pawned, although his wife disagreed. The day
after, Mrs. Bisby went to Mr. Bisby office very nervous
and asked her husband for the "object". The man made her
close her eyes and touch a soft piece of mink. She was
excited, but when she opened her eyes he saw a little stole.
She was about to cry, but she had to dissimulate. Finally,
when she was leaving the office, she saw the secretary of
her husband wearing the black mink coat. So, he found out
that her husband also had been having an affair, but she
couldn't say anything without expose herself. Ultimately,
her plan to keep the coat had backfired.

Mrs. Bixby was a selfish woman who had been cheating her
husband during a lot of time. She had been seeing a man
called the Colonel for eight years, once a month. But
according to the story, it seems that she didn't love him,
because at the end of the relationship she was more worried
about keeping the mink coat than for her feelings. She was
an smart woman, used to having what she wanted, so she
prepared a plan in order to cheat again her husband and
keep the coat. Mrs. Bisby was a manipulative, arrogant,
even cruel woman. She was very materialist and a
consumate liar, but she was also brave in the sense of doing
anything for her own benefit. In any case, in the end her
plan backfired because his husband wasn't so naif that she
expected. She betrayed Mrs Bixby but at last she had a taste
of her own medicine.
