Philosophy of Education

I believe that teachers act as facilitators of learning, but that it is a students responsibility
to truly want to learn. Creating an environment where my students feel that they are encouraged
to develop their understanding and question what does not make sense to them is important in
fostering a healthy and positive classroom. I want students to feel that I am a role model in their
community and that I look for opportunities where I can assist each student in reaching their
greatest potential. It is important that I am aware of the fact that students enter the classroom
with different experiences and different cultural, economic, and familial backgrounds; this means
that class material must be explored with sensitivity.
I believe that each student learns in a different way, so providing those opportunities for
students is absolutely paramount. Providing differentiated instruction during lessons is one way
that will allow each student I encounter to absorb and retain information that will help them grow
as individuals. However, I also believe that students should be challenged to go beyond their
perceived comfort levels in order to be the best and most knowledgeable they can be.
I hope to instill in my students the same passion I hold for literature and theatre. I will use
my passion to direct school plays which will bring the community together to support our
students and foster school spirit. I would love to get involved in a Gay/Straight Alliance, to
further show my investment in the many colours our students bring into the school.
Under the ethical standards for the teaching profession, teachers must show care, respect,
dignity, and trust to their students. Students are the number one priority. Doing my best to
provide for each students individual needs will allow me to be the best teacher I can be.
