The first $1 bill was issued in 1862 as a Legal
Tender Note with a portrait of Salmon P. Chase,
the Treasury Secretary under President Abraham
Lincoln.
In 1933, $1 United States Notes were issued to
supplement the supply of $1 Silver Certificates.
The current design of the United States one
dollar bill ($1) technically dates to 1963 when the
bill became a Federal Reserve Note as opposed to
a Silver Certificate.

In 1963 production of one dollar Federal Reserve
Notes began to replace the $1 Silver Certificate.
The border design on the front was completely
redesigned and the serial numbers and treasury
seal were printed in green ink.

Two Dollar Bill

Two Dollar Bill

The United States two-dollar bill is the rarest


denomination of US currency. The front side of
the bill features a portrait of President
Thomas Jefferson and the reverse side of the
bill features the painting The Declaration of
Independence by John Trumbull.
The most recent printing of two dollar bill was
the 2003 Series, which was printed between July
and September of 2006. The bills were issued
for all 12 Federal Reserve Banks. The Series
2003 note contains the words THIS NOTE IS
LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND
PRIVATE on the left side of Jefferson's portrait.

The Five Dollar Bill

Sections of the back of the five dollar bill are blanked out
when viewed under an infrared light. Modern anticounterfeiting technology was introduced to the five dollar
bill in 1993. The anti-counterfeiting measures added were
a plastic security strip and microprinting around the
portrait of Lincoln. The five on the lower right corner of
the reverse side of the five dollar bill is enlarged and
purple in the Series 2006 print.
1861, when the first $5 demand note was issued,
contained a picture of Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton's
image has since been replaced with others, most notably,
Abraham Lincoln's, who has been the face of the $5 bill
since 1914
There have been four designs of the $5 Bill.

He was not a President


Alexander Hamilton and he was killed in a duel by Vice
President Aaron Burr.
Hamilton was a revolutionary war hero and leading
architect of the new American government. He coauthored the Federalist Papers, considered one of the
most important contributions to American political
thought. As Washingtons right-hand man and the first US
Secretary of the Treasury, he formulated an economic
policy that got the then-new nation on its feet.

The modern twenty dollar bill contains several
anti-counterfeiting measures, including colorshifting ink, a watermark and microprinting.
The size and quality of Andrew Jackson's
portrait on the front of the twenty dollar bill
was increased in the Series 2006 printing.

Grant was the symbol of Union victory during the
Civil War
The 2004 series fifty dollar bill was the first to
use multiple colors since the 1905 $20 gold
certificate. The front of the fifty dollar bill also
includes a borderless American flag and a small
silver blue star to the lower right of Grant's
portrait.

billion of new 100 dollar bills, amounting to $350
billion. In time, as much as 90 percent of those
bills will be laced with trace amounts of cocaine

Fun Facts

Although experiments with paper money did occur throughout the


early history of the country, they were largely unsuccessful. People,
for good reason, didn't trust the notes and preferred gold and silver
coin.

1. There has never been an African American


on any U.S. Currency
2. Martha Washington is the only woman whose
portrait has appeared on a U.S. currency
note. It appeared on the face of the $1 Silver
Certificate of 1886 and 1891, and the back
of the $1 Silver Certificate of 1896.
3. U.S. Bills are not produced from paper,
instead they are made from 75% cotton and
25% linen blend with silk fibers running
through it.
4. Largest Bill ever printed is the $100,000 Bill
1. it was actually a Gold Certificate issued in
1934. These notes were used for
transactions between Federal Reserve
banks and were not circulated among the
