Grunge

Background
Grunge (Sometimes referred to as the Seattle sound)
is a subgenre of Alternative Rock that emerged during
the mid 1980s
It started in Washington particularly Seattle area

Inspired by hardcore punk, heavy metal, and indie


rock, grunge is generally characterized by heavily
distorted electric guitars, contrasting song dynamics,
and apathetic or angst-filled lyrics

Background
Grunge became commercially successful in the
first half of the 1990s, due mainly to the release
of Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's Ten.
The success of these bands boosted the
popularity of alternative rock and made grunge
the most popular form of hard rock music at the
time
Although most grunge bands had disbanded or
faded from view by the late 1990s, their
influence continues to affect modern rock music.

Nirvana
Nirvana was one of the main bands that actually
started grunge.
They were formed in 1987 in Aberdeen, Washington by
singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic
In the late 1980s Nirvana established itself as part of
the Seattle grunge scene, releasing its first album
Bleach or the independent record label pop in 1989.
The band eventually came to develop a sound that
relied on dynamic contrasts, often between quiet
verses and loud, heavy choruses
Some of their big hits were Smells Like Teen Spirit,
and Come As You Are

Pearl Jam was formed in Seattle,


Washington, in 1990
Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream
with its debut album, Ten. One of the
key bands of the grunge movement
in the early 1990s
Some of their big hits included
Jeremy, and Alive

Bush
Bush was formed in London in 1992
shortly after vocalist/guitarist Gavin
Rossdale and guitarist Nigel Pulsford
met
The band found its immediate
success with the release of their
debut album Sixteen Stone in 1994
Some of their big hits include
Glycerine, and Machine Head
