Shaping a Social/Political Theme into a

Theatrical Style

The summative is worth 30% of the overall mark: Directors Notebook and Interview 10%, Shaping a
Social/Political Theme 15% (research and performance), and reflection 5%.
In this part you, as a group, will choose a political/social issue/theme to explore collectively and find a
theatrical style that suits the exploration and performance of the political/social theme.
You will be expected to demonstrate dramatic, theatrical, exploratory, research and analytical skills
acquired during the course including brainstorming, finding ideas, researching, improvisation, script
writing, movement, rehearsal, revising, organizing and polishing a final performance.
Keep all evidence of research notes, images, and rough work in a folder that will be submitted at the
end of the unit with all other required work. No final mark shall be awarded without evidence of

Theme/Issue Proposal

You are expected to write a group proposal for a political/social issue

that you feel strongly about (that means something to you) that you
would like to explore theatrically. Think about current events and real
life issues. Consider things that you would like to change about the
world? Society? People in general? Remember, make it personal. You
want to be passionate about it so that you can explore it and fully discuss
and share with the class.
In your group proposal, also discuss how you may want to or can use
theatre to explore your particular issue/theme. What theatrical styles
would lend themselves nicely to explore this issue/theme? (dance,
movement, mime, tableaux, etc)
Also, each group member will contribute a minimum of 2 supporting materials to prove their thinking and
inquiry about the selected theme/issue. This may include newspaper stories, Youtube videos, songs, poems,
stories, dances, photos, magazine clippings, etc.
You will have to present your completed proposal and findings to Ms. Lillie. Remember you want to be
organized, eloquent and persuasive as you are trying to convince us that your issue/theme is important
enough for your collective exploration.

Your group must reach a consensus on a single social or political theme/issue around
which your theatrical presentation will be built from the outset as there are both group
and individual components in this part of the summative. After these decisions have
been made, students will need to negotiate to determine which theatrical style is most

appropriate for creating the performance on the selected theme/issue.

Research and Writing Process
Each group member is responsible for finding and bringing in material which
relates to the issue or theme chosen in some significant way. This material can
be drawn from a wide range of sources (libraries, internet, books, songs, stories,
newspapers, etc)
Choose material to dramatize. You can write an original script or adapt
existing material (plays, scenes, songs, quotes, newspaper stories, poems, etc).
You can turn a song into a dance piece, or a poem into dialogue. Original scripts
can be created by cutting statements, headlines and dialogue out of newspapers,
magazines or any print source.
Each group member must submit a fully explored and written scene/dramatization/ exploration or piece of
theatre to produce that is geared to 4-5 performers.
You must consult with the teacher at least once during this research/writing process, preferably at the
halfway mark. You will be expected to show rough work and your partially completed rough draft. Keep a
paper copy of all rough work.
Upon completion of your rough drafts, your group will examine, discuss and analyze the dramatic material.
The group will make choices about retaining those things which it considers dramatically effective, editing
those with potential and setting aside anything which does not fit the issue/theme.

Rehearsal and Final Performance

Once stylistic choices are made about the dramatic work, begin to work
with the dramatic material.
You need to start interpreting selections; rehearse, rehearse, rehearse.
Remember, linking dramatic selections together can be effectively created
through movement, song, repetitive statements, improvisation, choral
readings, etc. Dont leave an empty stage or use a blackout mid
performance.
You will have a final performance in front of an audience of peers. Remember that this project should be a
statement of your groups thoughts, ideas and feelings about your issue/theme and should leave the audience
thinking about the presentation and its ideas.
