TRANSPORTATION
Unit of Inquiry #3
Cross-Curricular Opportunities
Social Studies: Students will explore the different ways people and
things get from one place to another and learn some of the reason
why things move. Students will explore how the physical
environment affects the way people and products in their
community travel.

Science: Motion of objects can be observed, measured and
changed. Students will explore ways to make something move
faster or slower and the concepts of force and gravity.

Language Arts: Students will be reading, writing, and learning new
vocabulary as they explore the beginning stages of the editing
process in writing.

Essential Questions
! What is transportation and are the different types of
transportation?
! How does transportation help people get to where they need
to go?
! What types of transportation are used in your community?
! How does a location affect the mode of transportation used in
a community?
! How does transportation make communities more effective?
! How do boats float, planes fly and motor vehicles move?
! How can we sort different modes of transportation?
! What types of technology are used in various modes of
transportation?

Key Assignment
Students will be using their creativity to create their own 3D paper
mache model of a mode of transportation of their choosing.
Students will then write a short story about their vehicle, from the
point of view of the vehicle. Students will explore a variety of new
terminology both descriptive and scientific. This will be a fun and
learning filled Key Assignment that the kids are really looking
forward to!
