4 ratio, variation, partnership
39 speed time distance work
10 ‘mensuration (area, volume, perimeter)
15 set theory (Venn diagrams)
TTT 19,20 permutation, combination, probability
2 geometry
*Low priority doesn’t mean UPSC won't ask it. It means do these topics after allotting time to other high
Priority topics for GS, reasoning, comprehension and maths first.
Chapters to avoid for CSAT
For the following topics, NCERT sufficient. Sarvesh goes into deeper concepts that are useful in CDS and CAT
but not in CSAT. Hence ignore
ed ice
ioe
Arithmetic progression 18 NCERT classi0 chapter5
Coordinate geometry 21 NCERT classi0 chapter”
Polynomials and quadratic "4 Class 8 chapter 9 and 14.
Trigonometry (height-distance = 11. ‘Mrunal.org/Aptitude
only) {not every topic under Trig.but
only height and distance)
‘Completely ignore following chapters
16. Logerithm Not part of CSAT syllabus, But asked In CAT & other Management entrance
17. function and exams
graph
Now let’s check individual topics. What to prepare, what to skip? I've used page numbers from latest
“Yellow” edition. But in each book edition, his page numbers will be different because he adds the new XAT,
LIFT etc papers and cutoffs in the beginning
High priority
Linear Equation
ies given in Chapter 13: Elements of Algebra
- _ in the initial part of this chapter he talks about polynomials, ignore it for the moment and directly
move to page 525, “Linear Equation”
- He has explained all four methods to solve Linear equations. But stick to substitution and elimination
‘method. Combined these two, you can handle pretty much every question.
- £13: Do Question 10 to 18
= Level 1: Do Question 23 to 31.Important: in Level1 exercises question No. 23 to 31: observe his explanations- how he solved them without
assuming X or ¥, or even framing equations. IF you master this technique, i'l save a lot of precious minutes
in the exam,
Basics, Number system
Prepare following topics
divisibiity 5
‘number system classification chart 14
prime number 15
Rule of simplification. Not directly asked but you need it for algebra/age related problems. | 17
number of factors 20
‘sum of all factors 20
HCF-LCM. Understand the concept of bells ringing together, 22:26,
HCM and LCM of fractions 32
decimal fractions 35.36
HGF and LCM of decimals 38
surds indices- basics 39, 42
factorial- only definition and property a4
facts about rational number 58
discussion about numbers (digit reversal) 63-65
progression => arithmetic 70
roman number system (it was once asked in pre-CSAT era) 73
important conversions 3
Then solve respective sums from the exercise section!
Low priority / Ignore
Following concepts useful in SSC, CDS and CAT. But l haven't seen them in previous UPSC hence classifying
under low priority / ignore category. Stil if you've time and mood, | suggest you learn them as well
mrunal.org
Squaring, properties of squares 914
LCM with remainders, successive division | 26-29
continued fraction 31
recurring decimals- addition and subtraction | 36
factorial dvisiblity 46
concept of unit digit 29
concept of remainder 54-55
irrational number 58
complex numbers 59-62
digital number system (binary, hexa ete) | 65-69

Percentages
You've to finish three chapters: 5, 6 and 7.
Sarvesh Chapter 5: Percentages
- Page 216: conversion of fraction to percentage and vice versa, Not forall numbers but for common:
25, 33, 50, 75 and 100%
~ Page 217 bottom box: how to solve % question using fractions.mrunal.org
Page 219 to 221: advanced concept of % change. Observe how he solves the sums without using
formula. But merely by drawing arrows and fractions.
Page 221-222: Product Consistency. Very important for CSAT. Observe all the sums given in
illustration.
~ Page 223. Population related problem- observe how he solved without formulas.
= Example 3 on page 224: observe how he used % to compare fractions.
Page 232: salve data interpretation sums given under “final round.”
Ignore nothing.
Sarvesh Chapter 6: Profit loss
= Page 249: concept of market price and discount.
~ Page 250: Example 13 observe how he solves successive discounts problem, without formula
Example 16-19: finding profit from quantity
- Example 22: fraud seller
Then solve up to level2 exercises. Specially focus on ratio, partnership and fraud related problems.
Ignore nothing.
Sarvesh Chapter 7: CI/SI/installments
Focus following
Example 12, 14, 15: and the exercise questions based on that theme.
= Observe the technique shown in solving level1 Question 12,
Ignore following
= formula to find out installments in compound interest rate
~ any sums that require lengthy and complex calculation (especially under compound interest rate)
Ratio Proportion Variation Partnership
Sarvesh Chapter 4
- page 187 example 2 “if 45 students can consume a stock of food in 2 months, for how many days will
this food last for 27 students?” observe how he solved it without using formulas. This is one of the
favorite questions of CSAT in last three years.
~ page 188 problems based on ages
= Page 189: problem on partnership.
= Then do all sums but ignore pure mathematical problems, that donot involve any real life situation.
eg. level 1 q. 21, 23 ete.
Speed time distance work
1._understand the “STD” method from Mrunal.org/aptitude
2. then do Chapter 8 and 9
3. Doall the illustrations and exercises but ignore the tougher questions from level2 and final round,
Averages and Alligations
Chapter 2: Averagesmrunal.org
+ ignore point 11 on page 150 about atb=k (its important for CAT, but not for CSAT)
= _ ignore last formula on page151 about (p+q) elements (Important for CAT, not for CSAT)
- If you're running out of time, then ignore level 2- but still do the average speed related sums from it.
= ignore “final round”
Other than that, do everything,
Chapter 3: Alligations
Alligiations are basically “weighted average.
if you've less time, then only do the solved illustrations and ignore the exercise.
Area Volume Perimeter (AVP)
Chapter 10 Mensuration
1. mugup the formulas given in the tables. it may look daunting but memorize with logic:
square=>cube. Rectangle=>cuboid and so on.
2. Solve all the introductory exercises.
3. You may avoid level 1, 2 and final round, but in that case, do solve the AVP section from NCERTs.
Data Interpretation: Venn Diagrams
= given in chapter 15 “set theory”
~ ignore first two pages of theory
= mugup formula number (i) to (i) on page 578-79. They're essential for solving Venn diagram
problems
~ ignore introductory exercise 15.1
- Do everything from pageS80 example 1 to all the way upto level1.
Data Interpretation
‘As such he doesn’t have separate chapter on DI but within chapteS “Percentages” he has given exercises in
‘the “Final round”. Solve them and read his explanations for shortcuts.
Low priority
Geometry: Triangle, Quadrilateral & Circles (TQC)
Learn all the properties given in his ready reference tables.
Ignore following topics in triangle
= orthocenter, centroid, incentre, circumcenter
+ sin, cosine rule
= Only do introductory exercises, ignore level 1, 2 and final round.
Permutation Combination Probability
Chapter 19 Permutation Combination
= ignore division into groups after ex.19.6= Memorize the rules below ex.19.7. they're important for finding how many rectangles/square in a
given figure. Also understand Q25 in final round. that type of questions were asked in past prelims.
= doall introductory exercises, level 1, 2 and final round but ignore pure mathematical questions like
Q.2 and 12 in level2
Chapter 20 Probability
= Only do illustrations and introductory exercises. Ignore levelt, level2.
+ Understand concept behind Q.16 in level2. That concept important for "how many triangles in given
figure.”
