Last Monday, Government published its annual crime report.

As we showed
in previous days, the first analysts gave their opinion about the increase in
youth crime and the effectiveness of the new programs applied by the
government last year and the new punishments. Today we are focusing in
re-offending side.
The report highlights that 60 % of men who go to prison for a year re-offend
within 12 months, a percentage which is higher than of women (with just
50%). Other figures that stand out in the report are the types of crime that
this people commit when they re-offend. Over a quarter (27%) of these
crimes are burglaries, followed by car thefts, mugging and pickpocketing in
decreasing order of weight. In other words, people who re-offend commit
misdemeanors with a trend toward thefts, as we can see when we notice
that other has just a weight of 20%.
If we focus in the reasons that people admit, the main impulses to re-offend
they had were the no possibility of getting a job, boredom or lack of money.
Another important fact is that a 60% of the prisoners who receive job
training find work when released. Finally, a number to think about: only 20%
of ex-prisoners re-offend if they find an stable work.
