Friedman, Morris. The Pinkerton Labor Spy. New York: Wilshire Book, 1907. Print.
According to this book, the Pinkerton National Detective Agency is the
head of many of the United States institutions. It is also the biggest, richest and
the most organized of them all. The Agency was founded in 1850 by Allan
Pinkerton, who was talented and far above the ordinary persons intelligence. He
even served as the Chief of the United States Secret Service at one point in
history. I will use this book in my project as it is a primary source and is all
about the Agency itself and not only about the founder.
Moffett, Cleveland. True Detective Stories: From the Archives of the Pinkertons. New
York: Log Cabin, 1921. Print.
The Northampton Bank Robbery on January 25, 1876 was the first case that
the Allan Pinkerton jumped on the case. After that, the Agency became
involved with the Susquehanna Express on June 20, 1883, the Pollock Diamond
Robbery on November 4, 1892, and the American Express Bank Robbery on
May 4, 1888. I will use this book in my project because it provides a detailed
account of some of the Pinkertons cases that he solved.

Allan Pinkerton found a job as a cooper and soon became involved in /
Chartism, a mass movement that sought political and social reform. His
activities resulted in a warrant for his arrest, and in 1842 Pinkerton fled to the
United States, settling in Chicago. There, he set-up shop and eventually found
and arrested a gang that had been using counterfeit money. This website will
help my project because the author explains why Pinkerton left Scotland for the
United States in 1842.
Anderson, LaVere, and Frank E. Vaughn. Allan Pinkerton; First Private Eye.

In this book, the author tells about the founding of the famous detective
agency and a few of Pinkertons notable actions. He started out as a barrel
maker from Scotland, into the creator of the worlds first detective agency.
Pinkerton was able to foil an attempt to murder President Lincoln. He was even
a spy during the American Civil War. This source will help my project because
it details key events in his lifetime and his important influence on America.

At an early age, Allan Pinkerton showed a thirst for adventure that didn't
always sit well with his father or his mother. Bright and energetic, he often
avoided his schoolwork to wander off for days hunting in the forests north of
Glasgow or fishing in the Clyde River. After his father was killed in a political
riot, Pinkerton left school and went straight to work. He became one of the most
talented barrel crafters as McCauley Cooperages apprentice. I will use this
website for my project because it discusses Pinkertons younger self and how
those events left an impact on his life.
Josephson, Judith Pinkerton. Allan Pinkerton: The Original Private Eye. Minneapolis:
Lerner Publications Co., 1996. Print.
Allan Pinkerton was the founder of Americas first detective agency in 1850
in Chicago, and brought down some of the countrys most dangerous
outlaws. Although a second-hand account of his actions, this book is very
important to my website as it contains many facts about Pinkertons actions
as a leader, his followers, and the legacy that he left behind for todays
America.
Morn, Frank. The Eye that Never Sleeps: A History of the Pinkerton National
Detective Agency. Bloomington: Indiana UP, 1982. Print.
In this book, the author describes Allan Pinkertons origins and the lessons
of war and crime on the society before and after the creation of the agency. Also,
the massive bibliography in the back of the book is a great way to find primary
sources. This book is excellent for my project; it contains excerpts from
Pinkertons written articles, giving me a perspective of how it felt to be the
worlds first detective.

Wormser, Richard. Pinkerton: Americas First Private Eye. New York, N.Y.: Walker.
1990. Print.
In this book, the author talks about Allan Pinkerton and why he decided to
create a detective agency to solve crimes. According to this book, Pinkerton was
a conservative radically opposed to slavery, a cautious man who risked his life
pursuing criminals, a militant labor organizer who suppressed the labor
movement, a domestic tyrant who championed a womans rights to be a
detective. This book will be a great addition to my website as it contains many
pictures and details the origins of the agency.
