Witteveen+Bos
Solar-Orientated Design
Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
To design sustainable housing that uses passive-solar energy, Witteveen+Bos
had to take into account the orientation of the buildings relative to the sun. The
housing development was located on two hectares of land in the KirchbergPlateau quarter of Luxembourg City. The undeveloped area had no nearby
buildings to conduct a solar study, so a new approach was required.

Witteveen+Bos used MicroStation to model solar sensors with various surfaces

and angles toward the ground. Solar exposure calculations revealed the ideal
angle for the building designs to maximize solar panel efficiency. Design
of the houses incorporated the optimal sun orientation and the ideal angle
of solar panels. Using the MicroStation Solar Exposure Calculator allowed
Witteveen+Bos to quickly recoup the technology investment.

Boon Lay Extension (MRT Line)
Singapore
The Boon Lay Extension is a mass transit project that consists of two identical
elevated stations located in the center median. The primary design goal was to
have a column-free platform, giving commuters an unobstructed view of incoming

MSN Prestressed Concrete
Al Nagfa Mall
Al Ain, United Arab Emirates
The 60,000-square-meter Al Nagfa Mall in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, is
the second phase of a four-level retail center with shops, restaurants, cinema,
supermarket, and food court. Total capital costs are USD 140 million. Plans called
for each large area of floor to be divided into four zones separated by expansion
joints.

MSN Prestressed Concrete designed post-tension concrete slabs as

construction proceeded and before architectural elements were finalized. RAM
Concept accommodated the many requested changes and its ability to overlay
performance plots on top of tendon profiles was critical. The ability to calculate
deflection under various load conditions and load combinations was pivotal in
gaining approvals from the consultant, client representative, and local authority.

MSN Prestressed Concrete

Lootah Office Towers, MotorCity
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
The Lootah office towers are two high-end commercial towers, each with
23 floors of office space, underground parking levels, and a ground floor with
landscaped gardens. MSN Prestressed Concrete was retained to design the
post-tension slabs and suggest possible cost-saving modifications to the
structures. The total capital cost of the project is USD 85 million.

68

RAM Concept accurately calculated and displayed the precompression in the

slab, which helped select the size and location of an expansion joint and the
pour strips required to minimize any shrinkage cracking. The parking and ground
floor, each 10,000 square meters, were post-tensioned to save costs. Due to the
size and presence of retaining walls, careful analysis was undertaken to ensure
effective precompression of the concrete.
