Computer Aided Design and M.E. Engineering Design) (Regulation 2013) Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks Note: Use of Design Data Book is permitted. Any required design data can be suitably assumed. PART A—(10 x 2 = 20 marks) Answer ALL questions, 1. What is the importance of the factor of safety in designing a component? 2. Write the mathematical expression for Von-Misses stress for a two-dimensional plane stress, 3. Write the transformation matrix to find out the 2D stress system on an oblique plane when the component is applied with o,, 0, and r,, stress system, 4. Reduce the maximum shear stress and its plane from the shear stress equation for an oblique plane. 5. Define the following with respect to the gears : Normal force; Force along the line of action. 6. What strength of the material and why is to be considered while deciding the minimum centre distance between the two spur gears? 7. Define the following with respect to the gear-box : (a) Preliminary ray/speed diagram (b) Kinematic arrangement. 10, 11. What is meant by automatic power transmission? Why double block brake/double-shoe internal expanding brake is more practical than single block brake/single-shoe internal expanding brake? What is the advantage of pivoted block brake over the rigid block brake? PART B— (16 + 16+ 48=80 marks) (a) (@ Compare the weight and stiffness of a hollow shaft, with outer diameter equal to twice the inner diameter; with that of a solid shaft if outer diameter of hollow shaft is equal to solid shaft diameter. 7 6) (i) A 250 mm diameter solid shaft is used to drive the propeller of a marine vessol. It is necessary to reduce the weight of the shaft by 70%, What would be the dimensions of a hollow shaft, made of the same material as the solid shaft? © Gii) A solid aluminum shaft of 1 m length and of 50 mm diameter is to be replaced by a hollow steel shaft of the same length and the same outside diameter, such that both the shafts can have the same angle of twist per unit twisting moment over the total length. What must be the inner diameter of the hollow steel shaft? Take modulus of rigidity of steel equal to three times that of aluminium, © Or (b) Design a gearbox of the headstock of a turret lathe having arrangement for 9 spindle speeds ranging from 31.5 rpm to 1050 rpm. The drive is from an electric motor of 3.75 kW at 1500 rpm. Design should include the following : 6) @ Preliminary and final ray diagram/speed diagram i) Spur gear design (ii) Kinematic arrangement. (a) A rope drum of an elevator having 650 mm diameter is fitted with a brake drum of 1 m diameter. The brake drum is provided with four cast iron brake shoes each subtending an angle of 45 degrees. The mass of the elevator when loaded is 2000 kg and moves with a speed of 2.5 mis. The brake has a sufficient capacity to stop the elevator in 2.75 m, Assuming the coefficient of friction between the brake drum and shoes as 0.2, find G@ width of the shoe, if the allowable pressure on the brake shoe is limited to 0.3 N/mm? and (ii) heat generated in stopping the elevator. (16) Or 2 63438 13, b) @) Gi) Derive the following for an internal expanding brake @ (2) the moment due to the normal reaction (2) the moment due to the frictional force (3) braking torque. ‘The arrangement of two brake shoes is shown in Fig. 12 (b), which act on the internal surface of a cylindrical brake drum. The braking force P, and P, are applied as shown and each shoe pivots on its fulcrum O, and O,. The width of the brake lining is 40 mm. The intensity of the pressure at any point in the shoe is 0.46sing, where g is measured as shown from either pivot. The coefficient of friction is 0.42, Determine the braking torque and the magnitude of the forces P, and P,. ® ‘Note: All dimensions are in ‘mm’ Fig. 12 @) Design and draw a HAND OPERATED SCREW pressure for 40 ton capacity and the following components are to be designed. (48) @ co) ) a Frame made of irons. Bush bronzes, Pressure plate high grade cast steel. Foundation bolds 640. Selection of screw frame is “I"-section, safe working stress can be based on standards. Unsupported length of a screw is 60 em. Or 3 63438 ) A building contractor needs a small, gasoline engine powered air compressor to use for driving air hammers on remote job sites. A preliminary design concept is shown in the Fig. 13 (0). The engine is coupled through a clutch (that can be disengaged to start the engine) toa gear set to reduce the engine speed and boost the torque appropriately. ‘The ratio of the gear set is to be determined. The 2.5 hp gasoline engine is governed at 3800 rpm. The gear set's output shaft drives the crankshaft of a single cylinder piston compressor through a keyed coupling. Some preliminary thermodynamic calculations have indicated that the desired flow rate can be obtained from a 25 m® stroke volume compressor running at 1500 rpm. Design all the components of the system shown in Fig. engine Fig. 13 (b) 4 63438
