Disparities in health outcome between the rich and the poor illustrate tbe influence of
socioeconomic factors in morbidity and mortality. What are the reasons? What can be
done to solve this problem
The most basic causes of health disparities are socioeconomic disparities. Socioeconomic status
has traditionally been defined by education, income, and occupation. Each factor play a different
role in health outcomes. I would like to discuss first about Education- it plays a vital role because
it shapes future occupational opportunities and and earning potential. It also provides knowledge
and life skills that allow better-educated persons to gain more ready access to information and
resources to promote health. Next is income, In addition to providing means for purchasing
health care, higher incomes can provide better nutrition, housing, schooling, and recreation.
Health effects at the upper part of the distribution may more strongly reflect relative status, while
at the lower part they may be more linked to absolute deprivation. Among the employed,
occupations differ in their prestige, qualifications, rewards, and job characteristics, and each of
these indicators of occupational status is linked to mortality risk. Lower-status jobs expose
workers to both physical and psychosocial risks. They carry a higher risk of occupational injury
and exposure to toxic substances. In addition, job strain and lack of control over work are greater
the lower ones occupational status.
So what can we do to solve this problem? First I would suggest that we improve Education so
that everyone has a more "equal" foundation.
Next, I also think that Community trade can be beneficial to us. For instance, teaching poor
communities to develop their local resources and eventually sell their products to manufacturing
companies is a great way in not only developing the economy of the community but more
importantly making the people self-sufficient and self-reliant. By improving their socioeconomic
status, then I believe it can also improve their health.
