PhilPop calls for 4th festival

song entries; deadline set
INTERESTED composers may
submit entries to the 2015
Philippine Popular Music Festival (PhilPop) songwriting competition until Feb. 28.
The contest, now in its
fourth edition, is open to all
amateur and professional songwriters who are Filipino or of
Filipino descent. PhilPop, which
aims to foster musical creativity
and innovation, urges hopefuls
to experiment: A song entry
may be written in any genre or
form; the use of other Filipino
dialects are likewise encouraged.
All entries should be original, and havent been licensed,

distributed or performed publicly prior, stressed Ryan

Cayabyab, PhilPop executive director.
After the deadline for submission, a panel of judges will
select 12 songs that will move
on to the finals, slated in July.
Their creators will get the
chance to win P1 million.
Past festival champions are
Karl Villuga (Bawat Hakbang,
2012), Thyro Alfaro and Yumi
Lacsamana (Dati, 2013) and
Jungee Marcelo (Salbabida,
2014).

Vamps: Were not a boy band

COMPOSED of four goodlooking lads no older than 20,
British group The Vamps is often compared to boy band
One Direction. Bass player
Connor Ball insists there are
more differences than similarities between the two pop acts.
For starters, Ball doesnt
consider The Vamps a boy
band. Were boys in a band,
he told the INQUIRER in a recent phone interview. We
play instruments ... Weve
been compared to other
artists, but we would rather
focus on doing our own
thing.
The Vamps, which also include Brad Simpson (lead vocals), James McVey (guitar)

and Tristan Evans (drums),

likewise write much of its material.
The band, whose music is
described as pop-rock and indie, is set to take stage at the
SM Mall of Asia Arena on Feb.
1.

Fusion
Over 30 local artists and
acts representing different
styles and genres will take the
stage in a music festival fittingly dubbed Fusion.
Big names top-billing the
event, set on Jan. 30 at the
SM Mall of Asia concert
grounds, include Sarah Geronimo, Gary Valenciano, Bamboo, Gloc-9, Joey Ayala, Noel

Cabangon, Yeng Constantino,

Christian Bautista, Ebe Dancel, Kamikazee, The Dawn,
Sandwich and Parokya ni
Edgar.
The music festival is not
just an event, but a movement
that will hopefully inspire the
next generation to continue
patronizing and promoting
OPM, said project director
Gladys Basinilio, also CEO of
Carat Philippines, which is
spearheading Fusion 2015,
with the theme Play as One.
Tickets are available at SM
Tickets (4702222), TicketWorld (8919999) and TicketNet (9115555). Allan Policarpio

The Pope Francis Effect

By Dolly Anne Carvajal
(Conclusion)

INCE we are all loco over Lolo Kiko,

heres Part 2 of my
celeb forum on the Pope
Francis effect. Ive always
been more spiritual than religious,
thats why I like the Popes openness.
He doesnt have a holier-than-thou
attitude, which makes him all the
more lovable.
While watching
the TV coverage of
the Popes visit, my
kids commented that
people seemed kinder
and more cheerful
throughout those five
days. His being compassionate rubbed off
on us. Hopefully, it
stays that way.
I wish we could
have frozen time
when Pope Francis
was here. But a part
of him will remain
with us if we let his
teachings guide us every day.

JAMIE RIVERA
I was very nervous
before singing We
Are All Gods Children (at the SM Mall
of Asia). I was worried Id make a mistake and forget the
lyrics. But when I
started singing with
the children, I saw
Pope Francis asking
Cardinal (Luis) Tagle
about us. The Cardinal seemed to be
translating the song. I
saw the Pope smile
and he looked
straight into my eyes
as if he was pleased
with the song. After
our performance, he
called me and the
kids to go near him.
Slowly, we walked together toward him
and we all kissed his
hand. I felt so blessed
and happy not only
for myself but for the
kids who performed
with me. I felt the responsibility that goes
with the blessing I got

from the Pope our

duty to be more compassionate and merciful to others, especially the poor and weak.

ERIK SANTOS
The feeling was inexplicable. It was truly magical. I had
goose bumps all over
when I saw Pope
Francis in person.
When I was asked to
sing the responsorial
psalm in the concluding Mass (at the
Quirino Grandstand),
I said yes right away.
At first, I thought it
was just a big deal to
be part of the celebration. But when I got
there... I realized it
was not just a big
event. It was something that might not
happen again. I have
to admit that it was
nerve-wracking. I was
trembling the whole
time. Singing in front
of a mammoth crowd
was a dream come
true. I feel truly
blessed and honored
to have been given
the rare chance to
sing for our dearest
Pope Francis, millions
of Filipinos and, of
course, the Lord. Its
something that I will
treasure for the rest
of my life. And because of that extraordinary opportunity, I
thank God all the
more for the gift of
music that He has bestowed on me.

MARTIN
NIEVERA
Pope Francis

touched me with his

tenderness, humility
and compassion. His
sincere love and concern for people especially the less fortunate has made me
reevaluate what is important and what is
not. Now we have a
living, breathing answer to the question,
What would Jesus
do?

CHRISTINE
BERSOLA-BABAO
The Pope inspired
me to practice mercy
and compassion in
my daily life, especially to those who really need and deserve
understanding.

UMAMADA si CJ Leslie ng 33 puntos, 14

rebounds, limang butata at apat assists upang talunin ng Globalport ang KIA Motors,
100-89 sa simula ng PBA Commissioners Cup
kagabi sa Mall of Asia Arena.
Kaiba sa mga ibang imports, tahimik ang pagdating
ni Leslie ngunit gumawa ng
malaking ingay sa kanyang
unang laro.
Sinapawan ni Leslie si 7foot-4 Carnival (dating
Sorento) import Peter John
Ramos na may 41 puntos at
20 rebounds.
Sa ikalawang laro, masama
ang simula ng kampanya ng
Barangay Ginebra Kings na
sinasabing pinakamalakas ang
lineup bago ang conference.

Kinuryente ng Meralco
Bolts ang Gin Kings, 85-74.
Naniniwala si interim coach
Eric Gonzales na marami pang
ibubuga si Leslie na dumating
noong nakaraang Sabado.
Were still on our honeymoon stage with our import,
wika ni Gonzales. I dont
have problems with my locals, since we started practicing last Dec. 26 and (Leslie)
came in only Saturday last
week.
