Writing Workshop Period 7
Narrative Reflection
What new concepts have you learned during this writing unit?
What was difficult about this writing piece?
How have you developed as a writer since last year?
The purpose of writing many times during the year is to get better at the writing concepts
that the writing is offering. I have gotten a lot better at several concepts throughout this unit. For
example, I learned new rules about dialogue. I didnt know about the dialogue rules talking
about whether the question mark should be inside or outside the quotation marks. Also, I
learned how to reveal my character. For instance, I learned what idiosyncrasies is and how to
use it to tell about your character. Also, to describe when your character is touching an object to
show that the object has sentimental value to him or her. That is some of the many concepts I
learned throughout this unit.
To countinue, the way many people learn is through difficult tasks. I had several difficult
tasks myself. One thing that was difficult during this unit was describing my character. It was
hard for me to describe how my character looks and his actions while being in first person. I
easily showed my characters feelings, but not his actions. Everytime I say his actions trying to
use show not tell, it would be like the narrator is talking. This caused me to have trouble with
showing and not telling. That was my struggle throughout this writing piece.
Furthermore, since last year I have changed as a writer for the better. For example, I am
now a lot better dialoge. Last year, I didnt understand how to write dialogue properly. I now
know how to do this and know how to write dialouge that flows together. I also learned how to
describe my character better. Last year, all my characters were static characters. I didnt know
how to describe my character that was important to my story. In addition, I can have better and
descriptive words throughout my story now. Last year, I had one or two good words if any in my
story. That is how I develped as a writer.
