ENG4C: Diagnostic Writing & Metacognition Activity

According to Angela Lee Duckworth, grit it the # 1 predictor of success for people.
She defines grit as passion and perseverance for very long term goals, having
stamina, sticking with your future, and living life as if it is a marathon not a
sprint (Lee Duckworth, 2013).
After viewing the Ted Talk (link on webpage), complete the following:
1) Grit Questionnaire (link on webpage)
2) Brainstorm a Top Ten list of long term goals (over 1 year
to accomplish). Consider goals related to:
High School, Apprenticeship, College and
University
Short Term Jobs and Long Term Careers
Clubs and Athletics
Travel & Adventure
Money & Big Ticket Items (Car, House)
Friendship, Romance, Family
Faith, Spirituality and Social Awareness
3) Write a multi-paragraph personal essay of approximately 300-500 words.
Consider the following:
Focus on a single goal or small collection of related goals. Explain, in detail,
what your long term goal is and why you want to achieve it (PASSION!).
Describe the series of steps that you will have to achieve leading up to your
main goal (STAMINA!).
Describe the barriers that you will encounter leading up to your goal and how
you will overcome them (PERSERVERANCE!).
