PREFACE
Today the world is under the roof of technology and technology is such a think that will
not remain stable. New technology is comes in daily bases. So because of this reason
awareness about new technology is necessary among the people of a particular country. It
can be only possible when the college students are interested in using different
technological instruments. Therefore being a student of management, it is our
responsibility to know where the college students like to use such types of technology or
not. So to know this, it requires a practical as well as theoretical knowledge of the current
as well as past and future technology.
I have to choose any topic and analyzing the whole topic with the help of primary &
secondary data. The basic motive behind this project is to acquire knowledge about
various technological aspects of the topic that can aid the student in their future career. So
as a part of my report I have selected the topic Consumer behaviour of students of
surat city while buying a laptop or a tab or a netbook.
My main objective behind the winter project is to know which features are consider in a
laptop or tab by the college student of surat city while purchasing it.

INTRODUCTION
Laptop
A laptop is a computer which is easy to carry around. Its user can fold the laptop
up and be able to take it with him/her. The laptop was created mainly for this particular
reason. In order to develop an easier way to carry a computer technology was taken and
then scaled to smaller size.
A laptop computer is a personal computer for mobile use. A laptop has most of
the same components as a desktop computer, including a display, a keyboard, a pointing
device such as a touchpad (also known as a trackpad) and/or a pointing stick, and
speakers into a single unit. A laptop is powered by mains electricity via an AC adapter,
and can be used away from an outlet using a rechargeable battery. Laptops are also
sometimes called notebook computers, notebooks, ultrabooks or netbooks.

History
The first laptop was invented in 1979 by British Designer Bill Moggridge. Grid Systems
Corporation helped improve his design. Grid
made the product with a fold-down display that
covered the keyboard. It was called the Grid
Compass. In 1982, Grid Systems began to make
many Grid Compass laptops. They were mostly
sold to the US Military and NASA.
Grids computer was five times lighter than any
other computer used at that time. NASA used the laptop when it performed its shuttle
program, back in the 1980s. The Grid Compass required mains power.
Grid owned patents for the "Clamshell" design which is used in almost all modern laptop
designs. Grid Systems was bought by Tandy Corporation in 1988.

Historians, however, consider that the first true portable was created in 1981 and its name
was Osborne 1. Its inventor was Adam Osborne who was also a former book publisher.
He was the founder of Osborne Computer. His portable computer weighed 24 pounds.
The computer had a five-inch screen, a serial port and 2 floppy disk drives. Several
programs were included with the Osborne 1. Customers could also buy a 1 hour battery
pack.
Also in 1981, another laptop computer called Epson HX-20 went on sale. It was a
portable computer with a liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor. The computer also
included a built-in printer. The whole device was could be battery powered.
One year later, in 1982, two computer designers from Microsoft, Kazuhiko Nishi and Bill
Gates, started their discussion concerning a new portable computer. The main thing about
the computer was a new LCD technology. The prototype of the new laptop was presented
to Radio Shack.
The latter agreed to start the production of the computer. A year later the company
launched its TRS-80 Model 100, which was a computer that looked pretty much like the
laptops we know today.
In 1986 the company created its improved version called TRS Model 200. The following
two years saw the appearance of a laptop PC from Compaq Computers and the first
notebook-style laptop from NEC called NEC Ultraist.
The year 1989 was quite successful for laptop producers. First there was Apple Computer
that developed its first portable computer called Macintosh Portable the evolution of
which turned it into PowerBook. Then the company named Zenith Data Systems
introduced its Zenith Minis Port a portable computer weighing 6 pounds. Finally there
was Compaq Computer that designed its first laptop PC called Compaq LTE.

The development of laptops continued with various upgrades and additional functions
added. Laptops have a lot of advantages like:

People can carry them anywhere, whether office or home.

The work area of a laptop is much smaller than an ordinary personal computer.

At the same time portable computers have several negative points like:

Computer thefts became easier.

While used in the car they can cause car accidents.

They break more easily than desktop computers.

11

Netbook
Netbooks are laptops that are light-weight, economical, energy-efficient and especially
suited for wireless communication and Internet access.
A common distinguishing feature is the lack of optical disk (i.e. CD, DVD or Blu-ray)
drives. While the devices range in size from below 5 inches to over 12, most are between
9 and 11 inches (280 mm) and weigh between 0.91.4 kg (23 pounds).
Netbooks are mostly sold with light-weight operating systems such as Linux, Windows
XP and Windows 7 Starter edition.
Because they are very portable, netbooks have a few disadvantages. Because the
netbooks are thin, the first such products introduced to the market had their primary
internal storage in the form of solid-state drives and not hard disks, which are essential to
installing very many programs. Hard disk drive technology and form factors have since
been adapted to fit into netbooks.
Given their size and use of more rudimentary components compared to notebooks and
subnotebooks, netbooks also generally have a smaller-capacity hard drive, slower CPU,
and a lower-profile RAM capacity.
In 2009, Google announced an operating system called Google Chrome OS for this
market.
The big breakthrough for netbook computers did not happen until the weight, diagonal
form-factor and price combination of < 1 kg, < 9", < U.S. $400, respectively, became
commercially available in around 2008.

Features of a Notebook Laptop

Notebook computers all share a few key features. Laptops, also known as notebook
computers, come in many varieties with an assortment of features. It can be difficult to
understand all the terms used, but all laptops have a few key features in common.
Learning about these features can help to sort through the jargon and acquire an
understanding of notebook computers.

Processor

The central processing unit, or processor, handles

all calculations for running programs. It is often
referred to as the brain of a computer and is the
most

important

piece

of

hardware

when

determining the speed of a notebook.

RAM

RAM is random access memory. It is the

temporary storage system a computer uses
while handling tasks. RAM comes in sticks
that can be easily added to upgrade a
notebook.

Graphics Processor
The graphics processor is responsible for handling all
of the computer's visual tasks. Games, videos and
graphics software are all dependent on the video
card's performance. A fast graphics processor makes a
computer a great entertainment device.

B.R.C.M. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, SURAT

13
Consumer behaviour of students of Surat city while buying a laptop or a tab or a
netbook.

Hard Drive

A hard drive is the storage for all of the files on

the computer. A larger hard drive allows a user to
store more pictures, music, videos and games. A
faster hard drive allows you to access your
information more quickly. Solid-state hard drives
are the fastest drive technology available.

Advantages
Laptop computers are portable and can be used in many locations.

Portability:
Portability is usually the first feature mentioned in any comparison of laptops versus
desktop PCs. Physical portability allows that a laptop can be used in many places not
only at home and at the office, but also during commuting and flights, in coffee shops, in
lecture halls and libraries, at clients' location or at a meeting room, etc. The portability
feature offers several distinct advantages:

Productivity:
Using a laptop in places where a desktop PC can not be used, and at times that
would otherwise be wasted. For example, an office worker managing their e-mails
during an hour-long commute by train, or a student doing his/her homework at the
university coffee shop during a break between lectures.[42]

B.R.C.M. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, SURAT

14
Consumer behaviour of students of Surat city while buying a laptop or a tab or a
netbook.

Immediacy:
Carrying a laptop means having instant access to various information, personal
and work files. Immediacy allows better collaboration between coworkers or
students, as a laptop can be flipped open to present a problem or a solution
anytime, anywhere.

Up-to-date information:
If a person has more than one desktop PC, a problem of synchronization arises:
changes made on one computer are not automatically propagated to the others.
There are ways to resolve this problem, including physical transfer of updated
files (using a USB flash memory stick or CDRs) or using synchronization
software over the Internet. However, using a single laptop at both locations avoids
the problem entirely, as the files exist in a single location and are always up-todate.

Connectivity:
A proliferation of Wi-Fi wireless networks and cellular broadband data services
(HSDPA, EVDO and others) combined with a near-ubiquitous support by laptops
means that a laptop can have easy Internet and local network connectivity while
remaining mobile. Wi-Fi networks and laptop programs are especially widespread
at university campuses.

B.R.C.M. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, SURAT

15
Consumer behaviour of students of Surat city while buying a laptop or a tab or a
netbook.

Other advantages of laptops:

Size:
Laptops are smaller than desktop PCs. This is beneficial when space is at a
premium, for example in small apartments and student dorms. When not in use, a
laptop can be closed and put away.

Low power consumption:

Laptops are several times more power-efficient than desktops. A typical laptop
uses 2090 W, compared to 100800 W for desktops. This could be particularly
beneficial for businesses (which run hundreds of personal computers, multiplying
the potential savings) and homes where there is a computer running 24/7 (such as
a home media server, print server, etc.)

Battery:
A charged laptop can continue to be used in case of a power outage and is not
affected by short power interruptions and blackouts. A desktop PC needs a UPS to
handle short interruptions, blackouts and spikes; achieving on-battery time of
more than 2030 minutes for a desktop PC requires a large and expensive UPS.

B.R.C.M. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, SURAT

16
Consumer behaviour of students of Surat city while buying a laptop or a tab or a
netbook.

Disadvantages
Compared to desktop PCs, laptops have disadvantages in the following fields:
Performance:
While the performance of mainstream desktops and laptops is comparable, and
the cost of laptops has fallen less rapidly than desktops, laptops remain more
expensive than desktop PCs at the same performance level.[46]
Some manufacturers work around this performance problem by using desktop CPUs for
laptops.[48]
Upgradeability:
Upgradeability of laptops is very limited compared to desktops, which are
thoroughly standardized. In general, hard drives and memory can be upgraded
easily. Optical drives and internal expansion cards may be upgraded if they follow
an industry standard, but all other internal components, including the
motherboard, CPU and graphics, are not always intended to be upgradeable.
The reasons for limited upgradeability are both technical and economic. There is no
industry-wide standard form factor for laptops; each major laptop manufacturer pursues
its own proprietary design and construction, with the result that laptops are difficult to
upgrade and have high repair costs. With few exceptions, laptop components can rarely
be swapped between laptops of competing manufacturers, or even between laptops from
the different product-lines of the same manufacturer.

Ergonomics and health effects

Wrists:
Laptop cooler (silver) under laptop (white), preventing heating of lap and
improving laptop airflow. Because of their small and flat keyboard and track pad
pointing devices, prolonged use of laptops can cause repetitive strain injury.
Neck, spinal:
The integrated screen often requires users to lean
over for a better view, which can cause neck
and/or spinal injuries. A larger and higherquality external screen can be connected to
almost any laptop to alleviate that and to provide
additional screen space for more productive
work. Another solution is to use a computer
stand.
Durability
Equipment wear:
Because of their portability, laptops are subject to more wear and physical damage
than desktops. Components such as screen hinges, latches, power jacks and power
cords deteriorate gradually from ordinary use. A liquid spill onto the keyboard, a
rather minor mishap with a desktop system, can damage the internals of a laptop
and result in a costly repair.
One study found that a laptop is three times more likely to break during the first year of
use than a desktop.

B.R.C.M. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, SURAT

18
Consumer behaviour of students of Surat city while buying a laptop or a tab or a
netbook.

Parts replacement:
Original external components are expensive, and usually proprietary and noninterchangeable; other parts are inexpensivea power jack can cost a few dollars
but their replacement may require extensive disassembly and reassembly of the
laptop by a technician.
Other inexpensive but fragile parts often cannot be purchased separate from larger more
expensive components. The repair costs of a failed motherboard or LCD panel often
exceed the value of a used

laptop.

Heating and cooling:

Laptops rely on extremely compact cooling systems involving a fan and heat sink
that can fail from blockage caused by accumulated airborne dust and debris. Most
laptops do not have any type of removable dust collection filter over the air intake
for these cooling systems, resulting in a system that gradually causes it to conduct
more heat and noise as the years pass. Eventually the laptop starts to overheat
even at idle load levels. This dust is usually stuck inside where not even casual
cleaning and vacuuming can remove it. Compressed air can dislodge the dust and
debris but may not always remove it; after the device is turned on, the loose debris
builds back up the cooling system by the fans. Instead, a complete disassembly is
required to clean the laptop and some are difficult to disassemble by the normal
user and contain components that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD).
Security and privacy:
Because they are valuable, common, and portable, laptops are prized targets for
theft. The cost of stolen business or personal data, and of the resulting problems
(identity theft credit card fraud, breach of privacy), can be many times the value
of the stolen laptop itself. Consequently, physical protection of laptops and the
safeguarding of data contained on them are both of great importance.

Difference between a Laptop & a Difference between laptop & Tablet:

Laptops and tablet PCs are both viable options. However, they have some key
differences. In order to get the best computer for your individual needs, it's important to
compare the key features of both laptops and tablets.
Interface:
Laptop interfaces mimic a typical desktop setup, complete with a keyboard and
mouse. Tablets, however, have a special touch-screen display designed for use
with a digital pen, rather than a keyboard or mouse.
Portability:
Virtually all laptops are designed to be portable. Conversely, some tablets are
lightweight and portable, but others are bulky, designed only for desktop usage.
Battery Life:
Along with portability, battery lifespan is very important to ensure lasting usage.
Laptops usually have a better average battery lifespan; however, some tablet PCs
can be upgraded with "smart batteries" that improve charge duration.
Functionality:
Laptops often feature better hardware for faster performance with most general
programs. However, the touch display of a tablet PC allows increased
functionality with certain digital imaging programs like Adobe Photoshop or
Corel Draw.

B.R.C.M. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, SURAT

21
Consumer behaviour of students of Surat city while buying a laptop or a tab or a
netbook.

Size and weight:

Tablets come in different sizes such as 7 inch or 10 inch and weigh far less than a
laptop.
Software:
The software that runs on a laptop or tablet can be vastly different in terms of
capabilities. Now if the tablet PC is running Windows 7 such as the HP Slate or
ASUS Eee Slate it can theoretically run the same software as a laptop but will
likely be slower. This can make it easy to use it as a primary laptop using the
same software used in a work environment. The two other major tablet platforms
right now are Android and iOS. Both of these require applications specific to their
operating systems. There are tons of programs available for each of these and
many will do most of the basic tasks that a laptop can do. The problem is the lack
of the input devices and hardware performance limitations mean that some more
advanced features supplied by corresponding laptop class programs may have to
be dropped in order to fit into the tablet environment.
Cost:
Tablets are relatively new to the market and as a result, they tend to carry a fairly
high price premium for the new technologies they have installed in them. The
average starting price for a tablet PC seems to have settled around $499. By
comparison, there are laptop computers that can be found for as little as $300 to
$400. Of course, most people are probably not going to be looking at the least
expensive laptop. The average price of the laptop is more around $650 which is
slightly more expensive than the mid range tablet PC cost. Laptops still have the
advantage over tablets though if you look at equivalent performance and features.

RESERCH METHADOLOGY
Research methodology:
Research in common parlance refers to a search for knowledge. Once can also define
research as:A scientific and systematic search for pertinent information on a specific topic. In fact,
research is an art of scientific investigation. The Advanced Learners Dictionary of
Current English lays down the meaning of research as a careful investigation or inquiry
especially through search for new facts in any branch of knowledge.
The word research is composed of two syllables, re and search. re is a prefix
meaning again, anew or over again. Search is a verb meaning to examine closely
and carefully, to test and try, or to probe.

Marketing Research:
Marketing research is a systematic and objective study of the problems
pertaining to the marketing of the goods and services. It may emphasize that is not
restricted to any particular area of marketing, but it is applicable to all its phases and
aspects.

Definition:
The American marketing association has defined marketing as the systematic
process of gathering, recording and analyzing the data about problems relating to the
marketing of goods and services.

Limitation of the study:

The project is based upon various technological aspects. For which there will be the need
of information about latest technology among the college student of surat city. The
various limitations of the study are:
Due to time and cost constraint study will be conducted only in selected colleges
of surat city.
As the project is based on primary data, possibility of unauthorized information
cannot be avoided.
The respondents did not disclose some information, which was considered
confidential. Some personal details and other information were left out of the
study.
Since the sampling procedure was convenience, the sample may not be true
representative of population.
The study was confined only the college student of Surat city so the result cannot
be applied universally.
The lack of knowledge in Student about the latest technology or new version of
laptops or a tab can be a major limitation
The information can be biased due to respondent perception.

Scope of Future Study:

The scope of my study restricts itself to the interpretation of the college student of
surat city who purchase the laptop. A study of different brands of laptop is necessary. The
purchase decision of student largely depend upon type of processor, size of RAM, hard
disk capacity and all other things which are consider by the college student before
purchasing a laptop. In todays time the world is all about technology and because of
globalization the spread of technology is very fast in the whole world. Different types of
technology come in our life in daily bases and it is necessary that knowing about this
technology is useful in our personal and professional life. The project will use to know
the awareness of technology in the todays youth.
Moreover, to the future study the future research need to select the other variables
by means of other essential elements and the sample size should be more relevant.
Additionally, the result can be compared with analogous study which has taken
place in some other cities in order to provide difference and similarity of students buying
behavior.
