PRESENT CONTINUOUS with future meaning used to say what you have already arranged to
do. Examples:
A: What are you doing on Saturday evening?
A: Are you going tonight?
B: Im going to the theater.
B: No, Im not.
EXERCISE 1: A friend of yours is planning to go on holiday soon. You ask her about her plans.
Use the words in brackets to make your questions.

TO BE + GOING TO used to say about what you decided to do. Examples:


A: Ruth won some money last week. What is she going to do with it?
B: Shes going to buy a car, I think.
EXERCISE 2: Write a question with going to for each situation.
1. Your friend won some money yesterday. You ask:
(what/do with it?) What are you going to do with it?
2. Your friend has a party to go tonight. You ask:
(what/wear?) What are you going to wear?
3. Your friend bought a new table last night. You ask:
(where/put it?) Where are you going to put it?
4. Your friend decided to have a party. You ask:
(who/invite?) Who are you going to invite?
PRESENT CONTINUOUS X TO BE GOING TO We normally use the Present Continuous
when we say what we arranged to do for example arranged to meet somebody, arranged to go
somewhere. We use to be+going to when we decided to do it, but didnt arrange to do it.
Compare:
Im leaving tomorrow.
I decided not to stay here any longer. Im going to look for a new city
to live tomorrow.
EXERCISE 3: Complete the dialogues with the verbs in parenthesis in the Pres. Continuous or
using Going To.
1. A: I decided to write a letter to Janet.
B: Really? When are you going to write it? (write it)
2. Dan, its Jean here. What are you doing tonight? (do/tonight)
3. Look at the sky! It is going to rain. (rain)
4. A: Jimmy told me Diana offered you a job.
B: Thats right. But I am going to accept it. (accept it)
5. Tomorrow Im free. And you? Are you doing (you/do) anything special?
6. This food is terrible! Waiter!!!! Call the maitre! I am going to complain! (complain)
