Characteristics of lime produced from limestone containing diatoms

Abstract
To study lime binder from stone and brick masonry mortars examined to understand whether the
binders were hydraulic or not.
The mineralogical and elemental compositions, the microstructure of the lime binder were
determined by XRD, SEM-EDS, TGA analyses.

Mortars used for bedding and jointing masonry units are rendering masonry surfaces are
composed of binders and aggregates. Gypsum mortar is a binder long used in the brick vaults
and arches due to its quick setting and high mechanical strength.
