To My Father

at the river
i scratch where are you
on a strip of eucalyptus bark
and lay it on the water

it snakes downstream
until a crag lifts it free
and it's snared
in the beak of a gull
flying south

a week passes
i sit on the beach
at sunrise a pelican
sets down near me
stares and flies away

a month passes
i watch the river
wait for salmon
listen to fish tales
cast in the dawn

a year passes
i sit on the beach
write poems in the sand
watch the water rise
till the words disappear

one morning
a gull sets to land
as it touches water
all it's feathers turn to leaves
on each leaf is written

I am here
