Noise

Noisemeansanyunwantedsound.Sounds,particularlyloudones,thatdisturbpeopleormakeit
difficulttohearwantedsounds,arenoise.Forexample,conversationsofotherpeoplemaybecalled
noisebypeoplenotinvolvedinanyofthem;anyunwantedsoundsuchasdomesticateddogsbarking,
neighboursplayingloudmusic,portablemechanicalsaws,roadtrafficsounds,oradistantaircraftin
quietcountryside,iscallednoise.
Acousticnoisecanbeanythingfromquietbutannoyingtoloudandharmful.Atoneextremeusersof
publictransportsometimescomplainaboutthefaintandtinnysoundsemanatingfromthe
headphonesorearbudsofsomebodylisteningtoaportableaudioplayer;attheotherthesoundofvery
loudmusic,ajetengineatclosequarters,etc.cancausepermanentirreversiblehearingdamage.At
intermediatelevelstherearearangeofdeleterioushealtheffectsfromnoise.This"intolerable

RolandBarthesalsoobservesthatnoisecanbeperceivedeitherphysiologicallyorpsychologically.
Weperceivenoisephysiologicallywhenwe"hear"it.Ontheotherhandwhenwe"listen"toanoise
wearedoingthispsychologically.[3]Physiological noisecanbeexplainedphysiologicallyofcourse.
Whenweperceiveaphysiologicalnoisewesubconsciouslyfeelthevibrationsofthenoise(sound)
waveswithourparticlesinourphysicalbodywhereaspsychological noisereferstonoisethatis
perceivedwhenourconsciousawarenessshiftsitsattentiontothatnoiseratherthanlettingitfilter
throughoursubconsciouswhereitgoesunnoticed.
