(ii) Figure in [} represents maximum marks for that question. SECTION ‘Answer following in brief. [10] For a material, the modulus of rigidity is 80 GPa and the Poisson's ratio is 0.25. Find the bulk modulus and the modulus of elasticity of the material 02) A rod having circular cross-section of 20mm diameter is subjected to an axial pull of 10 kN. Find the maximum shear stress and its location from the vertical plane. [02] State and prove the “theorem of perpendicular axis” {03] A cylindrical shell having internal diameter of 1m and 20mm thick is made from a material having maximum tensile strength of 150 MPa. Find the maximum pressure that can be allowed in the cylinder? 03) ‘Answer ANY TWO from following: ‘A compound bar is subjected to the forces as shown in Figure - 1. The cross sectional area “A” of each part is also shown in the figure. Determine the value of force “P”, if the maximum Permissible stress in Steel is 150 MPa, in Copper is 80 MPa, and in Aluminum is 50 MPa. {05} A steel rod having circular cross section of 20mm diameter and 1m long is fixed on both ends at 30°C, find the magnitude and nature of stress developed in the rod at 10°C if (i) supports are non-yielding (Ii) one of the supports yield by 0.1 mm. Take E=200 GPa, anda= 12x10" per °C. [05] A feinforced concrete column having overall size of 400mm x 400mm is reinforced with 4 steel bars each of 20mm diameter as shown in Figure ~ 2. The column is subjected to a compressive load of 100 KN. Find (i) the load taken by concrete and steel and (ii) stress produced in each material. Take modular ratio = 20. [05] At a point in a strained material, the state of stress is as shown in Figure ~ 3. Find (i) the Principal stresses and (ii) the location of principal planes from plane AB. Find the maximum bending stress induced in the wire. Take E= 200 GPa 02) Draw qualitative shear stress distribution diagram for (i) Hollow rectangle and (ii) Triangle sections, showing the location maximum shear stress. {02) Explain in brief “Point of Contra-Flexure”. [02] A solid circular shaft of 40 mm diameter is subjected to a torque of 10 kN-m. Find the maximum shear stress induced in the shaft. {02} Draw stress-strain curve for mild steel, showing all important points on it. [02] Answer ANY TWO from following: A solid circular shaft is required to transmit 5 kN-m torque. If the maximum shear stress is not to exceed 70 N/mm? and the angle of twist is not to exceed 0.5° per meter length, calculate the diameter required for the shaft. Assume modulus of rigidity as 60 GPa. [05] A simply supported beam of span 8m and of a rectangular cross-section of 200mm width x 400mm depth is subjected to one central point load. If the bending stress is not to exceed 60 N/mm, find (i) its moment of resistance and (ii) maximum permissible value of central point load. {05} Draw shear stress distribution for a channel section shown in Figure — 4, if it is subjected to shear force of 10 KN. {05} Draw shear force and bending moment diagram for the beam shown in Figure ~5, {10} OR Draw shear force and bending moment diagram for the beam shown in Figure ~ 6.
