Academy
January-February
Edition
We are beginning the third quarter
of school, and are busy preparing
our students to master grade level
expectations.
Please review planners every night
to keep on top of student
assignments and progress.

For the Sake of your Child's

Learning
Parents:
There are a number of students who
are consistently failing to complete
their schoolwork. This not only
directly affects their grades, but
most importantly- it hinders their
learning.
Students MUST complete all work as:
1) Practice of skills, and
2) Evidence of Learning
Homework is a part of a childs school
work, and is very important. It promotes
independent learning outside the school
environment. In addition, homework
communicates to the parents some idea
of what their childs school program is
and how well the child is performing.
Concepts are best learned through
application. In most cases students are
given adequate time during the school
day to complete their work. There are
times that work needs to be completed at
home.

English Language Arts & Literacy
Making Inferences. How do I read between the lines?
When the answers are right there, good readers draw
conclusions based on background knowledge and clues in
the text. Ask yourself:
I wonder why...I wonder how...I wonder if...Find
information from the text that might be clues to the
answers and use these with your background knowledge
for possible answers.
Mathematics
Someone said, "A picture is worth a thousand words."
Turning the words of a problem into a picture or a diagram
can help you "see" the problem. By using the part of your
brain that visualizes a situation or object, you may see
relationships or information that helps you solve the
problem.
Attend to precision (be absolutely careful).
Take great notes, and review them daily.
Trust and use the strategiesthey work.
Practice and ask questions when needed!

that each of our scholars is equipped with all the skills and
strategies possible to be successful; however we can't do this
without you. Our monthly meetings are designed to bridge the gap
from home and school. Its a little disheartened when parents are
not present.
We have engaging and informative agenda's planned for each
meeting, and we are so excited about partnering with you to make
this school term a year of great success. You play a bigger role than
you think. Your children will grow by leaps and bounds if they
believe that you are an active partner in their learning. Please
become a partner and make plans to attend. We look forward to
seeing ALL of you on February 17, 2015 @6:00 PM. Congrats

Literacy
In literacy we are working on RL 5.6 -Describe how a narrators or speakers point of view influences
how events are described. Students will be able to Identify the person who is telling the story, know that the way a person
tells a story is influenced by their role and the outcomes of the story, and understand how the narrators point of view
influences the description of events. It is imperative that your child read for at least 30 minutes EVERY day.

Math
FRACTION-ACTIONthe heat is on for learning the 7 standards of Fractions
completing homework, studying, reviewing, and practicing is going to be even more
important this quarter. Fractions account for almost 50% of the 5th grade math EOG
getting a great understanding is paramount for success. Multiplication facts are still an
issueplease practice at home with flash cards.

Science
Students will start an in-depth study of Weather and the Water Cycle. Students will learn how to measure
weather, the difference between weather and climate, and the jet stream. Reading and studying plays a major
part in ScienceVocabulary is huge, and attentiveness in class will make all the difference. Please remind your
student that every subject is important, and they are responsible for learning.

Homework Tip -Check homework for completion: While students should be responsible for
completing their own assignments, you looking over what they've done keeps you informed of
what your child is studying, this also provides the sometimes necessary reminder to complete the
work, and shows that you care about what your child is working on.
