Is electric car better for

the environment?
In 2013, 67 % of the electricity generated in the U.S
came form fossil fuel (coal, natural gas, and petroleum)
Nearly 40% of that figure is attributed from coal
The coal usage for electricity generation is
79% in China,
78% in Australia
43% in the United Kingdom

These suggest that the coal is the main resource that

in electrical generation
Thus, the increase in electric cars will increase the
reliance on coal

Why does the increase

reliance on coal bad?
The mining of coal is an ugly and environmentally
destructive process
Burning the substance in power plants sends some 48
tons of mercury neurotoxin into Americans air
and water every year
Coal burning contributes some 40 percent of total
U.S. carbon dioxide emissions
It is estimated that that coal mining and burning
cause at least $62 billion worth of environmental
damage every year in the U.S. alone, not to mention
its profound impact on our health.

Other effects
Coal is a non-renewable resource
When coal is burned,carbon dioxide,sulfur
dioxide,nitrogen oxides, andmercury
compoundsare released.
These toxic gases can pollute the air.
Pollutants build up in the water used in the power
plant boiler and cooling system
If the water used in the power plant is discharged
to a lake or river, it could be harmful to marine
lives

Thus, is electric car any

better than gasoline or oil
car in term of
environmental impact?
