Assignment 2

Deadline: Feb. 04, 2015 Wednesday 11:59pm.

1.

Hint: Since we are required to use rms values to represent their magnitudes, the magnitudes of
instantaneous voltage and current are:
() = 2()
() = 2 ( )

2. In Problem 1, = 120V and = 30 A

(a) Plot the following as a function of t:
(i)
, , and ()
(ii)

p (as defined in i p (t) 2 I p cos t ( 2 I cos ) cos t ) and p1 v i p

(iii)

q (as defined in iq (t) 2 I q sin t ( 2 I csin )sin t ) and 2 =

(b) Calculate the average Power P.

2
2 1/2
(c) Calculate the peak value of p2 in part (a) and Q from Q VI sin VI q (S P )
(d) Calculate the load power factor (PF). Is the load inductive or capacitive? Does the load
draw positive vars?
Hint: (a) here v,i are instantaneous magnitude values. Get the algebraic expression of ip iq p1 p2,
and please plot them in Matlab.

For the waveforms in Fig.1 , calculate their average value and the rms values

Fig. 1
An input voltage of a repetitive waveform is filtered and then applied cross the load resistance, as
show in Fig.2, Consider the system to be in steady state. It is given that L 5uH and

PLoad =250W
(a) Calculate the average output Vo
(b) Assume that C that () . Calculate I Load and the rms value of the
capacitor current iC
(c) in part(b), plot vL and iL

Fig. 2
Hint: Upper case letter means average values; lower case letter means instantaneous values. Pay
attention to the upper and lower cases below.

(a): Vo=Vi-VL= Vi -0= Vi=

(b): ILoad=Vo/R= It is an average value (upper case)
To get ic_rms, get the plot of ic first, ic=iL-iLoad=iL-v0(t)/R= iL-V0/R (refer to part c for iL)
then assume it is triangle wave, calculate the rms value.
(c): vL=vi-vo=vi-Vo (move vi vertically by Vo units) (all instantaneous values here expect for Vo)
iL: use the estimation method (iL_avg & iL_pp) from tutorial
