Class 3
3rd Grade

December/
January
2014
INQUIRY PROJECT WORK
In third grade we continue to work
on readiness for fourth grade. I
have outlined the highlights for you
below.

Whats new this month?

We recently finished the book Matilda
by Roald Dahl. Students wrote about
their personal opinions regarding the
book and drew a family portrait of
Matildas family from various parts of
the book. Our math and writing
workshops are in full swing. Students
have the chance to work in small
groups twice a week for each subject
on more challenging problem solving
and writing.

Special Projects
We have just concluded our inquiry
projects about family and culture.
Students shared out their findings
about their families. We are currently
working on our Chinese cultural
heritage project. Students have come
up with very creative ways to learn
about and celebrate their history.

Literacy
We work in our guided reading groups
weekly. In writing workshop we are
working on the revision and editing
process as we learn about drafts and
making a finished piece for publishing.
We are learning about research
methodologies and we are breaking
paragraphs down in order to analyze

importance of each piece of

information.

Math and Science

In our math workshops we are tackling
problem solving using Singapore
Math. This has been challenging and
fruitful for students. All problems are
multi-step and require much critical
thinking. Students continue to excel
in Rocket Math and are on their way to
mastering multiplication and division
by the end of the year. We are
currently working on a unit on sound.
Students have created codes using
sound and they have learned about
sound waves in the air and through
different objects.

Next Month
Coming up we will continue exploring
sound and communication in science.
In math we will be moving on to
decimals, fractions and more data
driven problem solving. In literacy we
will continue working on our writing
and grammar. We will also do some
new read-alouds that the kids will
enjoy. They always request reading
each day and become very invested in
the stories.

Community

Mr. Zs store is closed for a bit while

we learn about responsibility in the
classroom. Students have been
working on their behavior as a class
and have been earning
compliments. Students now monitor
their own behavior on the behavior
chart to increase their personal
responsibility and ownership in the
classroom.
