Abstract: Infrastructure is the need of growing population. For satisfying this need proper
utilization of land is required. Many times engineers have to handle problematic soils. Many
ground improvement techniques are available for the treatment of such soil. Mixing of
admixtures with soils to improve the engineering properties of the soil is one of the popular
methods among ground improvement techniques. Use of different industrial waste for
geotechnical purpose fulfils the purpose of soil improvement at low cost as well as utilization
of waste material also takes place. Rice husk ash is one of the agriculture waste produced in
rice milling. Rise husk ash can be used in different industries like steel industry, ceramic and
refractory industry etc. Now a day civil engineers are also using rise husk ash in construction.
For proper utilization of this waste it is important to understand its impact on the
characteristics of soil. Studies based on the utilization of rise husk ash in the soil
improvement have shown that rise husk ash has potential to improve the engineering
properties of soil. It is found in different investigation that rise husk ash increases the load
carrying capacity of soil. It is also useful to suppress the swelling behaviour of swelling soil.
In this paper review of the different research to understand the influence of rise husk ash on
the behaviour of soil is presented.
Key words: Load carrying capacity, swelling
